Spice Markets Offer Fresh Spices, Spice Blends, Seasoning Blends, and More

Mary Martin
Spices, prepared spice blends, and prepared seasoning blends have all become very familiar terms for everyone who cooks at all. And it seems to me that the more seasoned the cook is the more often individual spices are used; the less seasoned the cook the more prepared spice blends are used. In any case there is a spice market to meet your needs.

For so many years spices were sought and treasured, sold and traded bringing life to foods that otherwise would have been bland and tasteless. Some spices were used for medicinal uses. Others were used primarily for their fragrance. All spices were part of the early trade routes and even caused some exploration. Spice has almost always been a part of life enriching it in so many ways. Today is no different. Spice is still a large part of our lives whether we notice or not. Spices are still used in so many products, in so many ways and enrich our lives through our sense of taste and sense of smell.

Market Growth

Spice markets have grown in popularity in the United States over the last twenty-five years. It has been a slow but steady growth taking spices from a few little cans in the grocery store to shops with bulk spices or spices prepackaged in a variety of containers. Some spice markets such as My Spice Sage, Spice Barn and Bulk Foods are virtual with online shops and catalogs sent on request. Others are contained in sections in bulk food stores or co-ops such as The Oak Cupboard. And still others such as Penzeys Spices are trendy spice market shops with large inventories of spices.

Selection

The great part of this market growth is the large selection of spices available to us all. No matter if you are a novice cook or a very well seasoned cook you will be able to find most any spice you are looking for with little difficulty. However you will now need a bit more knowledge of the spices you are looking for. If you go into a spice markets looking for cinnamon you now need to know if you want China Cinnamon or Tung Hing, Indonesia Cinnamon or Korintje, Ceylon Cinnamon or Vietnamese Cinnamon. There are differences. Some recipes call for a specific type of cinnamon and allow you to try a new variety of cinnamon and explore the difference. Cinnamon is not alone in the many types and varieties of spices that are new to many cooks. A trip to a spice market will help you realize how this market has grown.

Many spice blends and seasoning blends are available to make your cooking and use of spices faster and easier. There are spice blends for Italian dishes, Greek dishes, Mediterranean dishes, Mexican dishes, Asian dishes, Indian dishes and more and even more seasoning blends. There may be a selection of dried herbs and herb blends available also as well as a selection of extracts.

Make a List

Take a list and plan on finding some new and interesting items to make your cooking and palate a bit more lively. Most of the markets offer free recipes and tips for using the spices either at the store or online. A lot of information is available through cookbooks, cooking shows, blogs or online searches for specific spices. An actual visit to a spice market or even an online visit may cause a fantastic cooking adventure waiting to be explored.
