"We are certain this project will delight fans of Spider-Man and new audiences alike," said David Maisel, chairman of Marvel Studios. By putting one of its comic book heroes in a musical, Marvel is taking a step in a new direction. The customarily masculine characters are suddenly being placed in an effeminate role, a situation where Spider Man will get away from punching and kicking and into singing and delivering rehearsed lines. "Marvel continues to look to every entertainment medium to support the enduring popularity of our Super Heroes," Maisel explained Friday.
Because Spider Man fans aren't the first people you would expect to see in line at a Broadway show, the success of the production will likely be hit or miss. The musical talents of U2 will lure in more show-goers that wouldn't normally be among the Broadway crowd. The creation of this show is seen by some critics as shameless promotion for the Spider Man movies. However, others believe that this is a great move on Marvel and Broadway's part to attract a new niche of people to live shows. "We are thrilled with the talent on board," Maisel said. "The all-star creative team led by Julie Taymor, Bono and The Edge is second to none."
This announcement comes on the heels of the release of Spider Man 3, the critically acclaimed third installment of the Spider Man movie series. The movie will be in theaters May 4th, and it will maintain the stars from the first two movies, with Tobey Maguire playing Spider Man and Kirsten Dunst returning in the role of Mary Jane Watson.
What's next? Superman on Ice? Captain America's workout videos? Batman on lead guitar with Fall Out Boy? Nobody knows, but one thing is for sure- Spider Man, The Musical will be one of the hottest tickets this summer.
