Spider-Man 3 - a PSP Game Review

Walter Kovacs
Spider-Man 3 for the PlayStation Portable is a great game. It follows the same storyline as the movie (black suit, venom, etcetera). The story is actually pretty close to that of the movie. The developers added in some new cool levels to make the game longer (considering if they didn't, the game would only be a two hour game).

The graphics are crisp and clear. Spiderman doesn't seem blocky at all. The buildings, however, are very low resolution. They are completely solid (no glitches, like in some other games) but they are very blurry and pixelated. All the important characters are pretty smooth. These characters include Spider-Man, The Sandman and Venom. All the other characters, such as pedestrians and policemen, are sort of blocky. They seem like they were made to take up less memory.

The gameplay is also really totally awesome. For the first time in the Spider Man Series, your webs actually have to grab onto something for you to swing. In both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 you can just hold the swing button, regardless of where you are. In Spider-Man 3, you actually have to be near a building to be able to grab onto it and swing. You also control individual webs. You can't just hold the swing button to keep going. To start a new web, you have to release the swing button, then press it again. This adds a huge amount of control. You can control when and where you drop out of your swing, as well and what you grab with your next web. The combat of this game is also vastly improved for the other Spider-Man games. In most other Spiderman games, you would have to either find or earn combo attacks. In this game, you earn points from missions and use those to buy more combos or other powers for Spider-Man.

This game is a lot of fun, and you can pick it up off of ebay for only a few bucks. I really like it, and I hope you will too. This game is rated T for Teen on the PSP, but is rated less on lower resolution handhelds like the Nintendo DS. Make sure to try out this game, it's a lot of fun and it doesn't really ever get boring. I would rate this game a 7 out of 10 for its great graphics and totally awesome game play. Definitely rent this one before you buy it, but at least rent it.
