Spiderman 3: A Review

Jennifer Burss
The third chapter of the Spiderman film series rejoins the viewer with the life of nerd-turned- superhero Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire). In this installment of the films Parker is of course dating longtime crush Mary Jane Watson(Kirsten Dunst) and is throughout the entire film attempting to reconcile his relationship with his best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco).

All through the movie Macguire's character is stalked by what can only be described as parasitic black sludge. Eventually it takes on the form of what appears to be another Spiderman suit but is actually something far more sinister. A new character to the film seris Eddie, played by Thopher Grace, takes on the mysterious goop and becomes Venom, a mutated and evil version of Spiderman.

This film like the others has Peter Parker maintaining the dual identity as both himself a poor college student and Spiderman. The Harry Osborn character in vengeance assumes the identity of the Green Goblin, all the while Flint Marko (Thomas Hayden Church) the man who killed Ben Parker is turned into The Sandman.

This film had a very fun and entertaining feel to it. The action scenes in number three were fewer and farther spaced within the film than in the others. Although some common superhero themes play out in this film it isn't too saccharine if it's not taken too seriously, a colorful entertaining few hours of viewing-not a dramatic epic. Yes, the actors' performance may be a bit drab but the main three have done these characters for two previous films. All in all, no one performance stood out.

The effects and stunts were excellent, but this film in a nutshell is just something meant to entertain and delight, not much more. This is something with which I believe no fault can be found; in fact I find it refreshing. Nearly everything in entertainment is given some large dramatic ulterior meaning. Yes, there are some in this movie but I believe if you take those as the main purpose of this film you're most likely taking it too seriously and need to relax.

Comic book aficionados may find this hard to do, especially if they are purists. It's an excellent movie for the sake of enjoyment, very fun and slightly on the corny side. This is a great movie for the sake of pure entertainment, one that some may consider a family film. Its Spiderman not Shakespeare---relax, enjoy it, and have fun.

I loved the first Spiderman, didn't care for the second, but would like to see the third. Good review.

Thanks for the comment! I haven't seen Spiderman 3 yet, but I'm a fan of Thomas Haden Church (going back to his days on the TV show "Wings").

Great review - I haven't seen it yet, but the kids have. They loved it, so that's a plus for me, too. :-)
