Spiderman 3: Third Best in Series

Jon Sugi
Spiderman comes to close, or so we think in the third installment of the series. Before you read any further there are SPOILERS, but I will mention a warning before you read them. So here is my non spoiler critique. The movie was good, in fact the action and cinematography was very well done as was the first movie. On the other hand the movie was totally and completely off comic. What I mean is that the comic storyline and universe does not match the movie version in any way. So for those of you who read the comics like I have, be prepared to see some pretty crazy things. The movie is pretty clean with the dropping of the A** and D*** and thats all. I was sitting next to a man with a 5 yr old in the theater so the movie is very family friendly.

SPOILER alert. This part of the article will contain main plot points and spoilers. you have been warned, Nuff' said. So the movie has 2 or 3 bad guys in the movie. One switches sides during the movie. But basically the movie opens with the green goblin as the main bad guy. And Spidey clotheslines him in a tight alley. Harry hits his head really hard and loses his short term memory for a good part of the film. Then Sandman become the prominent bad guy, and the police realize he killed Ben Parker. Whoops, we made a mistake! Sorry Pete and Aunt May, we promise we will get him. Sandman gets chased into some molecular facility in a pit filled with sand.

And therefore by some freak accident, that ironically no one notices, he becomes the Sandman. Now back to Pete, some black goo got in his room by getting on his bike earlier in the movie. Are you confused yet? Wait it gets better. So Harry and Pete are friends, Spidey wants Sandman's head and the black goo attaches itself to Spidey's suit. Eventually through a lot of plot and character development (?) the black goo gets all over Eddie Brock. Eddie is a photographer that is a brown nose to everyone to get what he wants. Plain and simple character explanation for his character. Now at this point harry is bad again, Sandman is still out there, Spidey is back to normal and Venom is unleashed.

Mixed with all this good bad guy stuff is the tender and frail relationship between Peter and Mary Jane. They go back and forth like a seesaw in their relationship. Do they really love each other? Who knows. The final part which is amazing goes like this. Venom and Sandman team up against Spidey and Green Goblin for a ultimate showdown to save Mary Jane. Spidey saves the girl, harry sacrifices himself for Pete, Venom gets blown up, and Sandman tells his heartfelt story about the night with Ben Parker. Pete forgives Sandman, and Sandman goes off in the sunrise while Pete comforts Harry as he dies. This is pretty much the end of the movie as they wrap up the film at Harry's funeral.

The film is good, however it runs all over the place with multiple villains and Peter's relationship difficulties. On a good note the comedy was much funnier and well placed in this film than any of the others. The emotion was pretty intense and you really feel for Peter in the movie. One of the most unbelievable parts has to be after Sandman and Venom almost kill Spidey, Harry saves his buddy. Then Sandman apologizes for what he did to Pete's uncle and how he wishes he could take it all back. And my mind is thinking, you killed his uncle and almost killed this kid and now you want him to forgive you?

This is a film worth seeing and then waiting until it comes to DVD or Blu-Ray in the near future. Go see it, have fun, and keep an eye out for Stan Lee and all his quotes from all his comics. That was by far the best part of the film. Could there be a fourth film? Very possible, especially with no mention of the Lizard and the introduction of three new characters ( but Brock dies), so two new characters. I can picture a few more films, at least one more because the Stacey family has to die.
