Spiritual Living 101 - God is Everywhere, Not Just in Church

Dispelling the Belief that Deity Can Only Be Found in Church

Briana Blair
Many people believe that the only way they can commune with God is inside a church. The truth is that God is everywhere, and we can worship when and where we choose.

Mainstream religion has spent ages perpetuating the idea the the truly faithful must attend church, and that real worship must be conducted in a religious building. This is utterly untrue. A person can connect to their God anywhere they are, at any time. Faith is not limited to any single structure or practice. You can commune with your deity in any way you choose.

Now, I'm not saying that there's no use for churches. What I am saying is that people should be aware that they can connect to their God in any way, at any time. Deity is within and all around us. We should commune with higher powers on a regular basis, and there are no true prerequisites for doing that.

There are many ways to connect to God and express one's faith and love of a higher power. Kneeling at your bedside for nightly prayer is a way of talking to God. Lying on the grass in an open field experiencing the wonder of nature is another way. There are as many ways of connecting to a higher power as there are people who would choose to do so.

Mainstream religion also often balks at the idea of people each having a bit of God inside them. Whether you believe that God created humanity or is the guiding force of it, it makes sense to believe that we all have a bit of that deity within us. We strive for proof of faith, spiritual perfection and connection with a higher power; it is the higher power inside us that causes us to do so.

I feel that we should all speak with our chosen deity (deities) often. Even if you don't believe in a being so much as an energy, you can still speak to it. Many of us do without even realizing it. Have you ever suffered some hardship, or saw some pain, and talked about it in your head or out loud? In a way, you're communing with the higher power, asking for understanding and guidance.

Communing with higher powers outside of a designated building can make the experience a much more personal one. You can do whatever it is that makes you feel closer to that power. Maybe you feel that taking a walk in the woods brings you closer to God. Maybe you find a quiet place to sit in prayer. Maybe you volunteer to help the less fortunate. All of these are valid ways of communing and connecting.

Never feel that you must communicate with or worship your God in any particular place or fashion. True belief and faith come from the heart, and you should express that in whatever way feels most right for you. You will be heard no matter where you are.
