Understanding Spleen Qi
The spleen in Traditional Chinese Medicine is not thought of in the same manner as Western Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the Spleen as part of a functional system, which includes the heart, liver and lungs. These systems govern a person's physical, emotional and mental well being. The Spleen's function controls a person's muscle function as well as the transformation and transportation of foods in a person's body. When a person's Spleen Qi is out of harmony, a person can feel fatigue, soreness and joint pain. It is believed that when the Spleen Qi is not in harmony for too long, a person may develop such Western diseases as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Arthritis and Fibromyalgia. The largest indicator to a possible imbalance is a person's tongue has swollen enough to leave teeth impression along its side. As with all herbal medications and supplements, a person should consult with his or her physician before starting any regiment to be sure that there will be no interactions.
Herbs to Harmonize
Spleen Qi works best with herbs, spices and roots that are sweet and pungent. The most popular items include, Chinese Licorice as it helps harmonize and lends a neutral energy; Fennel Seed is a warming herb to help Qi move through a person's body; Hawthorn Fruit acts as a blood thinner to move blood in the body; Ginseng is a warming assistant ingredient as well as helping to relieve stress; Calamus also known as Sweet Sledge eases a person's digestive system allowing Qi to help move foods; Dang Shen is in the same family as ginseng and helps nourishes the blood and provides a warming energy; Marshmallow Root soothes a person's body irritation and helps fight infections; Xian Fu helps harmonize other ingredients; and Red Dates help prolong and enhance other ingredients effectiveness.
