Spokeo. Some of Your Most Personal Information is Out There for the World to View!

Shelly DeAngelo
How much of your personal information is out there on the Internet for all the world to read? Head over to a site called Spokeo, and see for yourself. You'll be amazed, and maybe a little worried, about what you find.

The site launched in 2007. Spokeo stores information on your age, income, home value, credit score, and relationship status. Type in your name and city into the search box, and you'll find all that information automatically pop up before your eyes -- along with a Google-generated map to your house, which includes square footage, bedrooms, bathroom, and lot size.
Also up for free viewing, is your age, marital status, the name of your spouse, and other adults living in the household.

Much of this information is gathered from public and commercial resources. For a small fee, more detailed data can be obtained. Avaliable results may include, social network profiles, photos, home purchase price and extended information of other people living in this household. The low membership fee allows an easy and affordable way for people to access your most private information.

Here are some steps you can take to remove your information from Spokeo. First, search for yourself on the site, and copy the URL of your profile. Then, click on the 'Privacy' link at the bottom of the page, and paste the URL into the field under the heading titled 'To remove a listing from Spokeo...'. The site will then prompt you to provide an e-mail address. After clicking 'Remove Listing,' you should receive a confirmation e-mail, which will prompt you to confirm the removal.
This site serves as a stark reminder that, in today's Age of Information, our lives may be more exposed than we ever imagined.
