Sponge Painting Tips for Beginners

Sponge painting is gaining its fair share of popularity. This is because there are so many different sponge painting ideas that yield various looks. Regardless of the surface, each individual job looks entirely different. If you have been thinking of trying but don't know where to begin, here is a start. Sponge painting differs significantly from using a paint brush and/or a paint roller. Here are 10 simple tips that are useful for beginners.

Insure that any type of debris, wallpaper, or glue are properly removed before doing anything else. These items can stick to the sponge and/or the paint, creating a look that you won't want. The wall or surface of your choosing should also be clean.

Make sure that the surface is primed before even thinking about getting down to the sponge painting. Those that skip this process will live to regret it. Follow the directions per paint manufacturers instructions. This is true of any type of painting and is one of the most common mistakes that can easily be avoided.

After applying the base coat with a paint roller, allow for drying time. The surface doesn't have to be completely dry though. Some may even suggest that you begin sponge painting while the base coat still leaves a dampness. Personally, I prefer to let the base dry completely.

Do not, I repeat, do not paint with a sponge that has been used. Several particles of dirt and other items can get into them, leaving a lack luster paint job. Sponge painting should always be done with a new sponge.

Not only should the sponge be new but should not be man made. Always use a natural sea sponge when painting. Not only will this yield better patterns and designs, but they work much better.

It's equally important to make sure that there is no excess moisture in the sponge. Let the sponge expand in the paint and squeeze out the extra. It may also help to blot the sponge on a paper towel or other clean surface.

While you don't want too much moisture, the sponge should always stay damp. Do not let the sponge dry out too much. Doing this can wreck the entire project.

Rinse your sponge and rinse often. This helps prevent buildup in areas within the sponge. If you fail to rinse the sponge sporadically, the paint may blob on the surface or eliminate the design.

Depending on the size and individual sponge, I have always found it helpful to use a small piece of it for corners. For convenience, it's also a good idea to start here. Keep in mind, using small a small portion of the sponge is not only good for corners but can be done for other areas of the surface. Doing this adds more depth and dimension to the paint surface.

Roll the sponge across the surface gently. Rolling the sponge not only helps you to complete the project more quickly, but can play up the texture.
