Spook by Mary Roach

Ouija Boards, Ectoplasm, and EVPs Oh My!

After all basic and well known science law is Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. So, yes the body breaks down but, what happens to stuff that makes us, us? It goes somewhere, right? This book attempts an answer, and is quite funny too.

No matter who you are, you've probably wondered, what happens when we die? Or the slightly more glib "Is this all there is?" The bible says no, there's a place for us afterward. Science while not convinced, can't be sure. Now, here's a book that lets you in on trying to solve the age old question.

Spook covers all possibilities for the after-life from reincarnation to ghosts. It also dives right into the subjects of mediums and EVP. What makes this book so interesting is it's not written by a believer. Quite the opposite, Mary Roach is interested in finding proof but not so interested she accepts anything and everything at face value.

Not everyone who believes in ghosts is uneducated or easily lead. Some fairly amazing scientific minds have tried to puzzle it out. The topics range from "How much does the soul weigh?" to "Ectoplasm Conductivity" to "Who is the Best Medium" Surprise, surprise Alison DuBois won that honor. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had a hand in Spiritualism movement too (You to can be a medium or Sherlock Holmes, which ever comes first!)

Ms. Roach goes so far as to attend medium school in England to see what that was like. It's interesting to see how that actually plays out. You can hone medium skills, or can you? Turns out you can! But, as always there have been plenty of fakers. I guess even here, why learn when you can fake it?

This book also shows its reader how legitimate science has been trying for years to find proof of an after-life. So, contrary to popular belief, it's not just some crackpot idea held by new age-y crystal wavers. People who believe in science can believe in ghosts too, Especially Since science can not conclusively prove or disprove ghosts. Don't believe me, read it for yourself.
