October is here and Halloween is right around the corner. The timing couldn't be better for The New York City Horror Film Festival.

Taking place from Nov. 10 to Nov. 14 at Tribeca Cinemas, the festival has been scaring moviegoers for nine years now. The event pays tribute to the original classics we grew up with while celebrating the newest masters of horror and gore; it even honors science fiction.

Festivities include screenings, parties, panel discussions, celebrity guests, and even giveaways. Because of the timing, some attendees even dress up in Halloween costume.

It all started in 2001 when Michael J. Hein -- CEO of MooDude Films -- decided Manhattan needed a film festival dedicated to horror and science fiction. What started off as a small event now garners worldwide attention each year.

For one week, New Yorkers get a chance to appreciate classic horror films while getting a taste for the newest trends in the genre. The festival is also a competition with 50 to 60 films vying for top honors, including Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Cinematography, Best Special Effects, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay (Submitted and Screened Film) and Audience Choice.

The New York City Horror Film Festival will be held at Tribeca Cinemas on the corner of Varick and Canal; admission is the price of the film tickets (panels may be subject to an additional charge).
