Night of The Demons (1988)
A group of teenagers decide to spend Halloween night in an abandoned funeral parlor, now a haunted house called "Hull House". Angela (Amelia Kinkade) is the hostess of this party that involves ten teenagers who meet an unholy presence when they decide to party here. This movie is creepy in that it sneaks up on you with its scary parts; Angela isn't even bad until she gets possessed by the demons and from there she becomes the villain in the movie. You should try the original version of this movie before you see the remake starring Shannon Elizabeth and Edward Furlong scheduled for release October 9th.
Donnie Darko (2001)
A very interesting and twisted movie; there is more to this one that is on the surface. It deals with Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) who appears to be slowly going crazy as he is seeing things that aren't there and being followed by a giant rabbit named Frank. This cultivates of this movie comes on Halloween night where you find out exactly what has been going in Donnie's world to cause him to act the way he is as well as find out where Frank comes from. This movie is one of those that is hard to describe you have to see it for yourself. But you will enjoy yourself should you choose to watch this movie.
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
This is a classic! Who doesn't fondly remember watching with Linus to see if the Great Pumpkin came out of the pumpkin patch to bring toys to all the boys and girls? This show is such a classic that it still comes on TV around Halloween to this day to ensure that many more children will fall in love
Trick 'r Treat (2008)
This movie was released to DVD and bypassed the theatre and I must admit it is on my "To Watch" list but the idea behind the movie gets me. It is four interwoven stories involving a high school principal who moonlights as a serial killer among other interesting stories that all take place on one Halloween night and that seems to be the catch how four seemingly different stories are somehow interwoven. When you add such actors such as Anna Paquin and Leslie Bibb this movie is worth at least one viewing.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Let's take a break from all horror slasher movies and look at a couple of family friendly ones. This is about three witch sisters who were hung on Halloween. However they cast a spell so that they will return whenever a virgin lights a black-flame candle. Lo and behold, 300 years after they die they are brought back by Max (Omri Katz) and with the help of his friend Allison (Vinessa Shaw) and sister Dani (Thora Birch) he must find a way to banish the Sanderson witches (Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker) forever. This movie will undoubtedly make your family list once you watch it, as it is enjoyable for those members of all ages.
Casper (1995)
Who doesn't love the Friendly Ghost? The first live action version of this popular comic finds Kat (Christina Ricci) with her dad, paranormal therapist Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) being hired to find and expel the ghost at Whipstaff Manor. This is a cute movie about a lonely little ghost who just wants a friend who is always foiled by his uncles, who enjoy scaring the humans (or as they call them "fleshies"). This movie is enjoyable for all members of the family and many older members will enjoy seeing the friendly ghost from the comics of their youth.
Mirrors (2008)
Okay yeah, you hear Kiefer Sutherland and may think "suck-fest". Even the plot may seem a little cheesy. A former police officer turned night security guard gets involved with a supernatural force that is killing his loved ones around him unless he can find the person they seek. However if you're like me and watched Poltergeist III at a young age you already have a thing about a lot of mirrors. And that is what this movie plays on that fear of so many mirrors around you. There is a fair amount of gore in here (especially in the un-rated version) but this movie has a decent plot despite the lackluster reviews it received and the ending is quite different than most people might expect.
Friday the 13th (2009)
While the original will always be a classic on it's own especially with the surprise of who the killer was, the remake was fairly decent in terms of plots and scare tactics. It was a good touch to learn a little bit more about Jason plus if you are a fan you will notice the little homages to all the other movies through this one (such as death by bow and arrow). What's more this movie does get you to jump a couple of times and the death scenes are enough to make you cringe. Come back to Camp Crystal Lake with Jason to learn a little bit more about everyone's favorite angry goalie.
The Amityville Horror (1979)
While the original doesn't have the yum factor that is Ryan Reynolds (even if he is crazy) as far as suspense goes this one beats the remake. You can see James Brolin's George Lutz go further and further into madness as the house begins to overtake him. You see how he changes and how it affects the whole dynamic of the family. And in one of the most recognized (and parodied) scenes you see the priest trying to bless the house and being chased out. Yes this is a movie that needs to make your "Must Watch" list when it comes to Halloween because it is scary as hell.
Halloween (1978)
You had to see this one coming. The original Halloween by John Carpenter is a classic on so many levels because it helped to start the whole "slasher" serial movie craze. It even takes a bit of what makes any horror movie scary and has a creepy kid at the beginning. It has Jamie Lee Curtis in one of her first big roles and introduced everyone to Michael Myers, which affected everyone who has seen it. Who doesn't get a chill up their spine when they hear the Halloween theme music? While the remake was okay and gave us more depth to Michael's background, the classic will always stand on its own as one of the greatest horror movies of all time.
Happy Halloween everyone! Have a good movie watching night!
