Halloween not only means dressing up in costumes and going trick-or-treating, but it is also an opportunity to concoct some spooky foods for your family and friends to enjoy! From batty sandwiches to blood punch to eyeballs, there's a recipe below that puts a spin on your mind and edibles!
Cookie Cut-Out Sandwiches
Dress up your sandwiches by using Halloween cookie cutters! Make sandwiches with white or wheat bread like you normally would. Cut the brown ends off, and then place the cookie cutters on top of the sandwiches. Your product - bat, pumpkin, witch, and such shaped snacks! If you or your kids have the munchies or maybe you have a dog, then you don't have to waste the scraps!
Monster Hands
Grab a bunch of clear plastic gloves, a bag of candy corn, and a few boxes of popcorn from the store to make monster hands. You can get different flavors and colors of popcorn to shake things up a bit. While you're popping the popcorn, place a candy corn in the tip of each finger in each glove. Then stuff them full of popcorn. Tie the end of the glove with yarn. Simple, huh?!
Witch Hats
At the grocery store, buy a pack of shortbread cookies, the ones with black stripes across the cookie and a fudge bottom, a bag of Hershey Kisses (any flavor/color), and a tube of red or orange icing with a very small, thin writing tip. When you're ready to prepare the witch hats, you will turn the shortbread cookies over. The black fudge side should be facing upwards. Now, squirt a bit of icing in the center of the cookie, and squish a Hershey Kiss on top of it. You can also use the icing to decorate the hat further if you'd like.
Eyeball Potion
Kids will love this treat! To prepare it, you will need to make any flavor of red JELLO. Pour the mixture into individual clear bowls or clear plastic cups before placing into the refrigerator. Once geld, finish the potions by placing a scoop of whipped cream on top of the JELLO and pushing a blueberry into the middle of the cream. There you have it - eyeball potion!
The Great Pumpkin
This treat always reminds me of The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. You will need to prepare a bundt cake and let it cool completely. Feel free to use any flavor cake you want. Spice and Carrot Cake mixes are great to use for the Fall season and Halloween. To decorate the cake, you will have to make a bowl of green frosting and a bowl of orange frosting. This can be done by adding green food coloring to white frosting, and red and yellow colors to make orange. Set the bundt cake on its platter and spread the orange frosting all over it. Then, spread green frosting over the handle part of an ice cream cone. Use the long, round-handled cones instead of the pointy ones. This is now the stem to your pumpkin, so drop it in the center of the orange pumpkin. Finally, fetch a small Ziploc bag and add the remaining green frosting to it. Push it to one corner. Snip the edge of bag. You're basically making a homemade icing tool. Slowly add the green frosting to the ridges in the cake. This highlights the pumpkin's ridges. This cake is almost to pretty to eat!
Spider Web Brownies
Scrumptious is the only word to describe these spook-tacular brownies! Immediately upon removing the baked brownies from the oven, you will evenly spread hot Jet-Puffed marshmallow cream over them. Now allow the brownies and cream to cool. Afterwards, put the brownie and cream onto your serving platter. Melt baking chocolate and pour it into a Ziploc bag. Press it to one corner, then snip the corner of the bag. Slowly drizzle the chocolate over the cream to make a large spider web design.
There are tons of other treats you and your family can make for Halloween entertaining. Kraftfoods.com as well as Martha Stewart and Good Housekeeping have excellent, unique recipes you can try. With some creativity, you can prepare an entire Halloween meal to serve!
