Instructions
1. Cut out the doll dress from the printed cotton fabric by cutting one 8" x 12" piece for the dress body and two 2.5" x 3" pieces of fabric for the sleeves. Cut the apron 6" x 8" from a matching plain piece of fabric.
2. To make the dress body take the 8" x 12" piece of fabric and fold it right sides together and sew a ½' seam along the 12" side. Turn right side out. This forms a cylinder of fabric. Fold the top and the bottom of the cylinder of fabric down and iron. Sew the bottom hem of the dress ¼ inch from the bottom. Take a 24 inch piece of heavy duty thread and double it in a large needle. Knot the end. Make a running stitch along the top of the dress body.
3. Hot glue the 1 inch wooden ball to the top of the wooden spoon. Let the glue harden.
4. Place the dress on the doll by gathering the top of the dress around the handle of the spoon beneath were the ball is attached. Pull the running stitch to gather the fabric. Tie the heavy duty thread off. Make sure the back seam of the dress is in the back of the doll. The curved back of the spoon is the back of the doll.
5. Make the sleeves by taking the 2.5" x 3" pieces of fabric and fold them right sides together. Sew a ½' seam along the 3" side. Turn right side out. This forms a small cylinder of fabric. Fold the top and the bottom of the cylinder of fabric down and iron. Take a 12 inch piece of heavy duty thread and double it in a large needle. Knot the end. Make a running stitch along the top and bottom of the sleeve cylinder. Lightly stuff the sleeves with polyester stuffing and gather the top and bottom of the sleeve using the heavy duty thread.
6. Hot glue the sleeves to the side of the doll at the top where the neck line is gathered. Hot glue the wooden rolling pin at the lower end of the sleeve where the fabric is gathered.
7. Make the apron by cutting a plain color complimenting cotton cloth into one 6" x 8" piece. Iron under ¼ "all the way around and stitch the sides and bottom of the apron down. Her apron can be embellished with a Bible verse or saying with fabric pens or stitched with floss. Take a 12" piece of heavy duty thread and gather the top of the apron. Place the apron under the round wooden head and hot glue in place. Make a small bow with the ¼" ribbon. Hot glue it at the top of the apron.
8. Hot glue the doll hair or yarn on the wooden head. Make a bow from the ¼" ribbon and hot glue in place. Cut the hair if needed.
9. Carefully draw in the face. Use the extra fine black Sharpie pen to make two round circle for the eyes. Use the 02 Micron pen to draw lashes. Use the extra fine pink Sharpie pen to make the mouth. Practice on a piece of paper until you have a face you like.
10. Cut a 3 inch piece of ¼" ribbon to form a loop. Glue it on the back of the doll below where the head is attached.
11. Cut 2 angel wings from the white fabric. Sandwich with batting and sew around the edges. Trim the edge with pinking shears. Or make a large bow from a 24" piece of 2" wide lacy gold or white wired ribbon and hot glue on the back of the doll to make wings. Make sure you can still access the loop to hang the doll on a wall.
Use care with the hot glue. Make sure you are near a source of cold water incase hot glue gets on your skin. Run the affected area under the water or keep a bowl of ice water nearby.
Traditionally the spoon doll was made using the spoon head for the doll head. This pattern can be adjusted for that.
It is easy to make this spoon angel into a kitchen witch by painting the head and hands a yellowish green, making the facial feature ugly and making the clothing black.
