Sports Ticket Stub Collecting Sets

Michael Luchies
A set in the world of ticket stub collecting could be anything from a ticket to each stop of your favorite bands tours to tickets from every year of the Kentucky Derby. While some people pick tickets from many venues and events, others choose to collect tickets in a set. You can define a set any way you choose, but once you choose whether it be one set to collect or hundreds, be consistent if you want to increase the value and cohesiveness of your collection. Just think if you had one ticket stub from a concert for every tour of the Grateful Dead, or each of Mohammed Ali's boxing matches. Pick what catches your imagination, and what would mean most to you, or someone who would be interested in purchasing it. If admission was with a ticket, you can collect it!

The most sought after and popular set for collectors is every Super bowl Ticket. The earlier the Super Bowl the harder to find and usually the more expensive to purchase. Super Bowl tickets because of their popularity and value and commonly reproduced and sold as 'authentic' when they are simply copies. An unused Super Bowl 1 ticket is like finding a needle in a haystack, but that doesn't stop collectors from pursuing it. The harder the set or ticket is to find the more enjoyable it is when you finalize it.

World Series sets are highly desirable for baseball fans. The more memorable the World Series the higher the collectible value. The 1986 World Series where the Mets beat the Red Sox in 7 games is much highly regarded than the 1984 World Series where the Detroit Tigers dominated another small market team in the San Diego Padres in 5 games (4-1). One memorable game also increases the value of the complete set. In the 1960 World Series Bill Mazeroski hit a walk-off 9th inning home run to lead his Pittsburgh Pirates over the New York Yankees in 7 games. The 7th and final game ticket of this World Series is worth over $500. Although I have not seen a complete set of the 1960 World Series I can guarantee that a few die hard Pirates fan have this set and are not letting it go. Myself being a Detroit Tigers fan have collected the entire set of 1984 World Series game tickets and program. For baseball fans World Series sets are the way to go, unless you are the poor unfortunate soul who is a fan of a team who has never made an appearance.

Tips to Start Collecting Ticket Stub Sets-
-Pick a relatively small set that highly interests you. Ex: 4 HR games by individual players, No-Hitters thrown by your favorite team, title clinching games.

-Look to buy within an auction lot instead of purchasing it by itself. Buying in an auction will save you money in the long run. Purchasing the ticket in a lot will allow you to pick up extra ticket stubs that you can buy/trade later and will in turn lower the cost of the ticket you originally went after.

-Do your homework; Look for similar collectors to help give you tips and to possibly buy duplicate tickets off of them that you still need.
