Sports Uniforms, Prom Dresses as Halloween Costumes

Cheap Do-it-Yourself Halloween Costumes

One of the cheapest ways to design a Halloween costume is to look in your own clothes closet. Do you have a "sports" outfit or uniform? A prom dress? Or an outdated fashion outfit? If you have any of those items, then you can make an interesting Halloween costume.

The sports outfit is one of the quickest costumes but add a twist to it. Make your football, baseball, hunting, bicycling or other active sport into a "sports accident". Several years ago my daughter was very much into showing her horse. She rode English style and she had a complete show outfit. She was at the age when she was growing out of everything so instead of giving away her riding clothes she wore them one last time as a Halloween costume with a "twist". Her costume was as a Fox Hunter that had an accident. She wore her riding helmet with "bloody" bandages underneath the brow part to show a head injury. Her arm was in a sling, she walked with a limp and had a TY beanie baby, a fox of course, pinned to her shoulder. Of course you can do something similar for a bicycling injury or any other active type of sport. All you need to do is add fake blood and bandages and maybe throw in a set of crutches for good measure.

A prom dress or a used wedding dress from Goodwill can make a great costume. I worked for a company that encouraged everyone to dress for Halloween. One year I ran out of ideas and went to the local Goodwill in the off chance that they might have a used Halloween costume that I would be interested in. I had no luck with finding any ready made costume but I did find a beautiful wedding dress that had a few rips in it. For just $10 I bought the dress. I now became the "dead bride" complete with dead flowers, pasty white make-up, messed up hair and a few more rips in the gown.

If you happen to have an old fashion item from the last 30 years you can play on that era in time. The '80s were known for the "boom boxes" so if you have one of those you can carry it around with you (remember they were carried on your shoulder) and dress in the style of the 1980s.

Mismatching is also another costume that not many people think of. Wearing items that just don't match like one each of a different shoe and sock or plaid pants with a flower top make for interesting conversation. Those types of costumes are great for digging out the items at the very far back of the closet, the items you should have gotten rid of years ago but didn't.

Dressing up for Halloween should be fun and not expensive.
