Spotting Your Rainbow

Dr. Jamie Yvette
I have always found it quite amazing that on the darkest, dreariest days, the most brilliant rainbows can be spotted. There's something about a rainbow that gives me hope for a better tomorrow. It's a beautiful reminder that even in the darkness, there is light.

I have found this to be quite true of life in general. Like most people, I have endured my share of dark and dreary days. I know what it feels like to experience failure, rejection, loss and heartbreak. I understand the meaning of loneliness and how deeply it can be felt in the middle of a crowded room. But I have seen my share of rainbows, and they have often appeared during these moments when little seemed to be going my way.

My rainbows have often been visible only to me. Some have been in the form of friends who, without being asked, chose to be there for me when I was hurting and thought no one cared. Some have been in the form of the unconditional love that I have received from my family. But many other rainbows in my life have appeared when no one was around and I had nothing but quiet time to reflect on the darkness and what was to be gained from it.

I have learned that spotting your rainbow does not require rose-colored glasses, drugs or alcohol. It's not merely a feel-good concept for those desperately needing to rise up from the depths of despair. All that is required to spot your rainbow is gratitude for the life that you have been given and for the opportunity to dream, hope, strive, give and love for yet another day. If you have not yet spotted your rainbow today, pause for a moment and simply give thanks for all of your blessings. You'll be surprised at the beautiful array of colors that warm your heart and comfort your soul!
