Spread Too Thin: How to Fail to Build an Income Online

Melanie L. Marten
There are hundreds of ways to make money online. Some popular methods are through get paid programs, ecommerce, online auctions, affiliate programs, and contextualized ads on niche sites. You can also write content articles, get paid to post on forums and blogs, get involved with a dropshipper, or multi-level marketing.

Knowing which money-making method to choose can be difficult. However, making that choice is the most important thing you can do to build an income online.

Many people start to build an income online with limited information. First, they come across paid email programs and join a few of those. When the money is not coming in quickly, they look for something else.

The next stop is frequently online surveys, closely followed by eBay and auction sales. But they never seem to qualify for the surveys that come in the mail, and eBay eats up most of the profits in fees. Time for the next opportunity.

A year goes by, and the dedicated income builder is involved with twenty-five money-making methods. Invariably, they are failing to make a real living online. They have fallen prey to the horrible fault of spreading themselves too thin.

Any one of the methods listed above can make you money online. The secret to any of them is to research to find out what you need to know, and to persevere. Pick a method and work on it until it is profitable. Then, and only then, move on to the next.

Below is a basic list of the ways you can build any of these money-making methods into a real income online:

Get Paid Programs

The only way to make real money online with these is to get a large referral base. Pick four or five long-lasting programs and advertise to get referrals. Better still, pick one program and build up the referral base to one hundred before signing up for the next.

Ecommerce

Research first. Find a product or small product line that is specific to a particular niche. Design or purchase a high-quality website, put the products on it, and advertise like mad. Once you are making a steady income from it, move on to the next project, or just keep building.

Online Auction Sales

This is similar to ecommerce. If you are an eBay seller, find suppliers or some source of lots of products. Treat it like a business and work every day.

Affiliate Programs and Niche Sites

The first step in building an income with affiliate programs is finding a niche. Your niche is your keyword phrase. "Video games" is a niche, but there is far too much competition to make it profitable. "Vintage RPG video games" could be a profitable niche if enough people search for it in one month.

Find a niche, find one or two top-quality affiliate products, and build a small niche website or blog. Learn how to advertise it and build an income.

Great article. A lot of people want the money to start rolling in immediately, so they give up when they find that it takes time. Good advice.
