Spring 2011 Fashion Trends: Fruit Patterns and Citrus Print Clothing

Lori May
One of the most unique spring 2011 fashion trends is citrus print clothing and garments with fruit patterns. Designers Miuccia Prada and Stella McCartney both featured this 2011 fashion trend on the runway, which you can read more about at Harper's Bazaar. While Prada's design featured a banana pattern over deep green, McCartney favored lemons, limes and grapefruits in a vertical print over a white base.

If you'd like to get a head start on this hot style for spring 2011, the following five garments and accessory examples feature similar fun, bright colored designs as to those seen on the runway. When wearing citrus prints and fruit pattern garments, you can play-up the bold design with other dramatic clothing pieces, or subdue the effect with simple, neutral hues. With the vintage appeal of fruit patterns and citrus prints, many of the garments and accessories already available in this trend are retro-inspired.

Citrus Print Clothing:"Citrus Twist" Citrus Print 1950's Style Halter Top by Bernie Dexter - Merge the popular retro theme for Spring 2011 with a Rockabilly style like this one. This halter top ties behind the neck, and is cut in a style reminiscent of the 50s. The bold, bright colors over a white base have citrus shapes, and a matching pencil skirt is also offered. Bright, busy garments like this can be paired with solid white or black styles to subdue the effect, or worn with other patterns in a Boho-worthy blend. This citrus print shirt is available online for $32 in sizes XS-XL.

Citrus Print Accessory: Citrus Delight Handbag by LA Black Bags - Etsy is a fantastic resource for upcoming fashion trends, unusual accessories and custom-made pieces. This clever handbag, which features citrus print shapes over a soft blue base, also has all the pockets and zippers required for a handbag to be practical. The soft pastel hues are perfect for spring 2011, as their abundance in garments is another upcoming fashion trend. You can purchase this citrus print accessory for $56.

Fruit Pattern Clothing: Fruit Pajama Pants by SO - These pajama pants are a great example of how fruit patterns can be done in a festive, but not overwhelming, manner. The black base accents the watermelon shapes, and pairing it with a green or pink shirt would further offset the bold, all-over pattern. The drawstring waist and soft knit cotton also make these great for exercising and yoga! You can purchase these fruit pattern pants online for $22, in sizes XS-XL.

Fruit Pattern Accessory: Vintage 1960s Low Kitten Heels in Colorful Novelty Fruit Printby Johansen - Kitten heels are another retro fashion accessory straight out of the 60s and 70s, which are very popular for the spring 2011 fashion season. These adorable 1.5" heel shoes have a fruit pattern painted on a white base, with faux gold leather and a brown suede interior. You can purchase them online in size 6 online, for $42 at Etsy.
