Spring 2011 Hemline Alert: The Midi is Back

Discover Three Affordable Midi Hemlines for Spring

Skirts and dresses are the quintessential clothing items for spring. For the last decade or so, short hemlines have reigned supreme, especially that flirty little mini. However, for spring 2011 the midi is the trendy hemline with top designers. Discover three trendy spring midis that won't put much of a strain on your pocketbook.

What is the Midi?

Basically, there are three main skirt or hemline lengths, mini (mid-thigh), knee-length and maxi (heel length or floor sweeping). The midi falls between the knee-length hemline and the maxi hemline. Typically, any hemline that hits between mid-calf and just above the ankle, is considered a midi.

The Romantic Plus Size Midi Dress at Jessica London

Full-figures will look captivating in this ruffled dress from Jessica London starting at $99.99 (price increases with size). The sleeveless spring dress comes in white or a feminine pink/white floral print with a ruffled neckline and layered ruffled midi-length hemline. Made from crinkle polyester chiffon the dress is fully lined and comes in sizes 12 to 30/32.

Style Tip: Spring is all about soft, natural looking makeup and this beauty choice works well with the dress. Hair should be casual, cascading waves or a loose chignon to complement his ruffled dressed. A crocheted cardigan can be worn, along with casual flats or sandals.

JCPenney Has the Perfect Midi for Early Spring 2011

The first few weeks of spring are not always filled with sunshine and moderately warm temperatures. For those early days that still feel a little windy and chilly East 5th's plaid bias cut midi for $44.00 is ideal. Made from a polyester/rayon blend this skirt features a wide band waist and a side, invisible sipper closure.

Style Tip: If there is still snow on the ground your leather boots will work well with the skirt. A cowl-neck, sleeveless knit top in ivory, heather purple or charcoal grey will complement this skirt.

Athleta Offers a Sporty, Yet Flirty Uneven Midi for Spring 2011

This sporty, uneven hemmed midi is only $49.00. The skirt is made from a cotton/viscose (rayon) blend and comes in berry swirl, dress blue, black, grey heather and peek-a-blue. Sizes range from xx-small to x-large. The lowest parts of the hemline reach to the midi length while the shortest parts of the hem fall just below the knee offering the right amount of flirt and demure.

Style Tip: A cropped top or bikini top in a complementary color is best for this skirt. You can even get away with cute, girly sneakers since this skirt has an athletic look to it.

These are just the first midi offerings for spring 2011 to hit stores. Since this is a designer trend, more midi hemlines are available at higher prices, so you may need to do a little shopping around to find cheaper midis. However, you can also fake the midi if you are average height or tall. Average height ladies can shop for long petite skirts or dresses while tall divas can shop for long skirts and dresses in average lengths to create the midi length. Sorry petites, you may have to get your long skirts hemmed at the cleaners or a tailor if you can't find this hemline in your price range. Happy spring trend shopping, lovelies!

What next Burkas? The Muslim Brotherhood has arrived.

What is this...some gay designers dream? Don't think so. Remember my mom's pics from the early 80's when they tried that...OMG!

Let me re-phrase...the calf, which may be heavier than the rest of your LOWER leg (naturally, rarely heavier than the thigh!!)

I nearly gagged when I started seeing these "midi's" back! They end at the most unflattering portion of the leg, the calf, which may be heavier than the rest of your leg appears. Yuck. Good report, though!
