Spring Asthma

Little Facts that You May Not Be Aware Of

Debbie

Over 24 million Americans have diagnosed asthma and there are many more Americans who be at risk for asthma and just are not aware of it.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, allergist members want to let people know about five small facts about asthma that they just may not be aware of.

At times the signs of asthma are indistinct. If you cough at night or get winded walking up the stairs, these could be signs of asthma. According to Dr. John Winder, chair of the ACAAI Nationwide Asthma Program, the lungs of a person with asthma has inflamed lungs all of the time. When a trigger makes the inflammation worse, that is what people believe is an asthma attack. However, that is not always the case. You can have asthma and not even be ware you have the condition.

Stormy weather can ignite trouble. Studies have revealed an in increase in asthma related emergency room visits after thunderstorms. The exact reasons are not known however, the burst of pollen grains due to the storm and the winds spreading these grains are suspected to be the cause of the occurrence. Allergists suggest that those with asthma stay indoors during a storm.

Pollen can be very strong. Many people who endure asthma find that their symptoms are triggered by allergies. Tree pollen, one of springs most common allergens. Various parts of the country have seen record setting levels this year. Dr. Winder suggests it may be a good idea to find out if allergies are the trigger for your asthma. Allergy testing can aide in pinpointing the cause and providing the correct treatment including things such as how to avoid pollen.

Exercise trouble. If you have a difficult time breathing during or after exercise you just could have Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstraction (EIB). Ten percent of Americans have EIB and they do not have asthma. Allergists can prescribe inhalers to be used before and after exercise. Allergists also recommend sports such as swimming, walking, field events and baseball for those with EIB.

Asthma has no age limits. Asthma can strike anyone at any age. Dr. Winder states the bottom line is if you have difficulty breathing have yourself checked out. Asthma testing is fast and painless.

Many asthma sufferers depend on inhalers to fend off serious breathing problems when they feel an attack coming on and many asthma sufferers depending on frequency and severity of attacks may need to take prescription drugs as well.

For those persons who do not wish to depend on medications try alternative therapies to help control their asthma and its symptoms. There are various alternative therapies in which can be tried. As with any alternative therapy please notify your health care practitioner.

Chiropractic

Some people have reported great relief after undergoing chiropractic treatments. The treatment restores the nervous system to function healthy when it does the respiratory system is also restored to normal functioning.

A trial for chiropractic treatment for asthma had been conducted in Australia. By the correcting the misalignment of the spine it demonstrated positive results on those who endured asthma. The patient group had shown remarked improvements with asthma symptoms along with reduced cortisol levels. Patients were monitored on a long term basis and were found to have fewer asthma attacks.

Some patients receiving chiropractic care for asthma may witness immediate results while others may have a more gradual recovery time. Improvement in asthma symptoms may take several months and patients should not discontinue their medications. Lightly applied spinal thrusts and cervical adjustments may aide in helping improve asthma symptoms in some patients along with decreasing the frequency of attacks.

Even though chiropractic treatment is highly noted for pain especially back pain, many health professionals do agree that chiropractic care can aide in the improvement of symptoms in numerous diseases and disorders. Even though there is no extensive documentation those who endure asthma could benefit from weekly or frequent chiropractic treatments.

Reflexology

Recent research has demonstrated that children with asthma have received benefits from reflexology treatments. Reflexology is a non-invasive appropriate therapy in aiding this condition. There have been numerous reports from therapists noting patients being helped with reflexology. The cause could be due to the fact that reflexology balances the organs and tissues throughout the body acting through the nervous system. It can actually aide in strengthening and normalizing the respiratory and circulatory system. This therapy aides in activating the bodies own healing force to strengthen lungs and bronchial tissue.

Hypnotherapy

Over forty years of research studies have shown that hypnotherapy can be an effective way to aide asthma patients to control , reduce and in some cases even eliminate their condition.

Hypnotherapy aides patients with asthma in numerous ways among them includes helping the patient deeply understand they have a way to stay calm and bring their breathing back to normal control. Hypnotherapists also teach their patients self-hypnosis in which they are encouraged to practice in between sessions with their therapist associated to positive specific suggestions. Other techniques are also used to aide patients to develop a deeply rooted knowledge and expectation that in the event in an asthmatic incident they will remain calm and be able to respond and deal with it appropriately.

Hypnotherapy sessions for asthma are to be used with current ongoing treatments as given by the health care provider. It is not to be used as a emergency resources. Resources:
