Spring Break Southern Style

Nicole Harris
When you ask your average college student where he or she is going for their spring break, the answer you will usually get is "South". Sometimes too far south. Often times students and traveling families alike miss a lot of fun and memorable experiences that lay just "south" of the Mason/Dixon Line. If your traveling through the Carolina's, South Carolina offers a particularly beautiful stretch of beach known as Myrtle Beach. Now most that live in the north east know Myrtle Beach well, but it is an often overlooked spot from west coast travelers, as well as our own southern road trippers. Myrtle Beach is suited well to families and young rowdy partiers alike. Condos are not terribly expensive and well within reach of the varying budgets of groups of beer thirsty college kids. The night life is favorable, plenty of night clubs and ample frivolity to be found. As you move farther south you'll find Savannah Ga. It's a beautiful city. Very "Past meets Present". Bay Street is known for its thumping nightlife and various pubs, bars, grills, and general places of interest. Plus, your allowed to walk around with your drinks, as long as they are in a container with a lid. Savannah offers wonderful dining. From the Tybee Island grill to none other than Paula Dean's home cooking, there is bound to be something for everyone's palate.

Moving a bit westward as we round our crescent, you'll come into Alabama. This is known as the gateway to the gulf beaches. However, if you take a look in central and southern Alabama, you'll find plenty of reasons that people often plan a stop in the area on their way to the gulf. The people are friendly and the weather is fantastic. Spring temps usually hover between 60-80 degrees. Excursions include camping, fishing, college town night life, and various other activities sure to keep you busy. Further southwest are Mississippi, and Louisiana. We all know what to find there. Travelers of late have been slightly discouraged due to the disaster in the gulf last year. As a resident of the area, I would seek to dispel any concern. The seafood is delicious, enjoy it till you pop! You won't regret it! The water's are as blue and beautiful as they have always been, The beaches and bayous are clean (as clean as a bayou can be) and accessible. For more information on specific travel locations and events in your springtime travel, pick a city and check their event dates, if it's posted there, your invited!
