Spring Break Surf Guide: Galveston, Texas Has Distinctive Waves for All Surfers

Tina Gallagher
The best and most economical spring break surfing is found at the nearest surfing beach. Not everyone knows this, but the coast along Galveston, Texas has some of the nicest surfing in the Southern United States.

The best time to surf is in the spring, when storms and weather changes bring consistent large waves. Of course, right before and right after a storm the surf becomes higher with larger waves, but surfing during these times is risky at best.

The best places to surf are between the 25th street and 61st street jetties. It always makes sense to surf in areas with a lifeguard present. If the red flag is up, plan for a picnic on the beach instead. And if no lifeguard is on duty, stay on the shore.

The waves are great for beginners to learn on, and there are waves for more experienced surfers to ride. Those surfers who try the waves on the days the red flag is up may very well make it to shore, but risk wiping out, getting bashed on the seawall or perhaps playing with a shark.

While rare, sharks do show up to surf beaches around the world. If one is sighted, hit the beach and have a picnic. Pull out the camera and try to get a picture or footage for UTube or the internet. Perhaps the local newspapers will pay for the shots.

Renting surf gear is easy in Galveston. There are several moderately priced shops and prices vary according to the amount of gear and the length of time it is rented.

There are RV parks in Galveston as well as vacation homes (some need to be rented a year in advance), hotels and motels. Scan a local newspaper for people willing to rent out a room for Spring Breakers. In this economy, it's not a bad idea. If you can get a deal on renting a bedroom, be respectful of your host(s).

Flagship Hotel in Galveston, built on top of a cement pier stands 1000 from the beach and sits over the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Each room offers a panoramic view of the ocean.

Galveston State Park has campgrounds from $15 to $25 per night. You can reserve a spot in the campground ahead of time; specific spaces cannot be reserved. If a severe storm or hurricane is headed into the area, the park will close and could be evacuated. In case of this, it's best to have extra cash for a motel and a plan in advance.

The best way to have an economical trip is to plan ahead. Study prices for hotel rooms, RV parks, etc. online for the best deal. Getting a local newspaper to see if anyone is renting a bedroom out for Spring Break is a great idea.

If getting a hotel room, make sure you have a refrigerator. Get a 2-for-1 special and store one for a later meal. Or, go to a supermarket and stock up on groceries. Have breakfast in the room, make and pack a couple of sandwiches for lunch and perhaps eat out. Having an Entertainment Coupon Book also helps to save money. There are deals on everything from hotel rooms, movies and more. Planning ahead with these and other deals will make your surfing Spring Break affordable and enjoyable.
