Spring Challenge Poem (April 1, 2009)

Rain on My Easter Parade

Deonils
I
It's been said April showers ... bring May flowers
I wonder which Polyanna penned these lines!
Do we not already savor cherry blossoms and showers
On March's yellow-brick road with forsythia, daffodils, and dandelions?

II
During my parade through holy week and Easter
Steady showers meant for Friday came almost all of Saturday
Yes, it rained on my parade; I almost cursed the weather
Then caught myself (Amen!) on the eve of Resurrection Sunday

III
It rained on my parade and I forewent my tirade ...
Negative thoughts reared up in my head, I concede;
But why did I miss the evening service called Tenebrae?
Perhaps due to my planting this and that seed?

IV
The showers made me smile long before the sun at three
The cherry blossoms - not quite spent - showered on cars
And anything outside, like the finest confetti -
More - on asphalt, a milky way replete with white stars!

V
I need not remind you that all weather has a fan or two
It is best to see the hand of Providence no matter what;
Easier said than done, I grant that to you ...
Yet in springtime, rain and pain are best Sonned up!

  • surprises like day-long showers come in any season; surprise yourself (ourselves?) by seeing
  • the Providential in what appears a "cursing" situation. Spring and Easter can be holy times!
April showers may sprinkle the finest confetti on you if you live close to cherry trees; and if one uses one's poet's eyes...the asphalt becomes a sky littered with numerous white stars.
