Drapes are one of the largest cleaning jobs in the house. They are frequently overlooked when spot cleaning is done, and they are typically a large hassle. Because of this they end up on the pushed off list. That place where all of the tasks you hate to do goes, but in reality there are plenty of things you can do to speed up the process and we are going to take a quick moment to learn about a few. After all, once you get the hassle of the drapes done, the rest of the house should be a cinch to spring clean.
Always look to gather your supplies that you will need before you get started. The less stopping you have to do in the middle, the less likely you are to get distracted or even push them off. If you are looking at all of the tools that you need right in front of you, motivation will help to drive your success.
Try to have a handheld vacuum cleaner, a small stepping stool, a steam iron, a lint roller or other similar brush, and some upholstery cleaner, as well as a sponge and cleaning cloth. To better organize yourself, you can feel free to stick all of the supplies into a tote, or even a plastic carrier if it helps you to stay better organized and get the task done.
You should seriously consider having heavy drapes actually taken to a dry cleaners to be properly cleaned. Typically, this is extremely affordable, and will allow you to focus your efforts on the other drapery pieces and get the task done much faster. After you take the main drapes to the dry cleaners, you need to break out your handheld vacuum and start cleaning those valances. These are really easy to handle yourself as long as you are patient.
After you vacuum the top of the valances, it is time to start to pull out the steam iron to help breathe some fresh new life into the fabric. This is typically a great way to help revive them, without spending a fortune, or even devoting an excessive amount of time.
Your next step is to start looking at the sheer curtains if any that you use. These are almost always machine washable, so check those labels, and toss them right into the washer on the appropriate setting. With a bit of careful patience it is possible to do a lot of the drapes at the same time after you check each of the tags to ensure they will not be damaged during the wash cycle. Be sure to pull them out of the dryer quickly upon finish though or they will quickly pick up wrinkles that are hard to remove.
Your going to find that some areas of the valance and even the other drapes are quite hard to clean, be sure that you are carefully treating them using the upholstery cleaner whenever you encounter any tough spots. Remember, patience and organization will be your greatest asset as you are working on the drapes and will ensure that you are able to get them finished and cleaned in no time at all.
