Kitchen:
• Clean out appliances (the refrigerator, microwave, etc.) Remove all food from the refrigerator and scrub with hot water.
• If possible, sweep under the fridge. (If it's anything like mine, you can at least sweep between the wall and the refrigerator.)
• Clean out cupboards - take out any old food that can be donated or tossed. Wipe down cupboards to prevent ants.
• If you have a dishwasher, run it empty with some bleach.
• If you have a garbage disposal, clean it out by stuffing ice into it with bleach. Cleans it out every time!
• If any appliances provided by the building are malfunctioning, contact your landlord to schedule a replacement.
Living Area:
• Wipe down and dust all furniture.
• Dust ceiling fans.
• Vacuum carpets.
• If you have carpet, you can rent a carpet scrubber from a hardware or grocery store. They work wonders!
Bathroom:
• Scrub shower, toilet and sink. I recommend the Clorox Green Works brand. It does a great job, and is better for the environment.
• Dispose of any old cosmetics and bottles.
• Check the caulking around your bathtub- if it's leaking, contact your landlord. They will usually fix it to prevent future water damage and/or mold.
Bedroom:
• Flip and vacuum your mattress so it's clean and even.
• Clean screens on windows- if there are any tears, replace them. (My apartment does not replace them, but other apartments might.)
• Clean the windows.
• Vacuum the floor.
Miscellaneous:
• Check the smoke detectors. Your apartment should do this at least once a year, but it never hurts to check yourself.
• If you have a porch, sweep it off.
• Check to make sure any sliding glass doors are properly on their tracks.
• Make sure any entryways are free and clear.
The great thing about living in an apartment is that if you have any problems, more than likely you can contact your building supervisor to take care of it for you. However, oftentimes there are a lot of buildings and not enough maintenance personnel, so it's important to check for things that you might normally overlook. Spring is a great time to do this: the weather is great, and it's easier to make any necessary repairs.
Take your time cleaning, it can be overwhelming to try and do it all in one day. Do a little at a time, and it will all be done in no time!
