Spring Craft for Kids--Pebble Rock Family

Kids Spring Craft Idea to Celebrate Springtime!

Lyn Vaccaro
Spring crafts for kids become more abundant with the onset of warmer weather making it possible to go out with the troops and find some of nature's treasures to use for crafts. I've decided on our next walk outside, I'm going to have the kids find some smooth, well rounded rocks to make a nice pebble owl family from. I know another mother who did this project last year and it turned out so cute I vowed to try it but haven't yet. This year is the year! Here's the procedure.

Supplies

Large smooth pebbles ( as many as there are members of your family)

Bright bold paint (neon is nice for this project)

White acrylic paint

Paintbrush

Felt tip pens (the same colors as the paint)

Small can of varnish

Directions

Start with a clean dry smooth pebble. Make a decision on where you'd like the front of your owl to be and then using the acrylic white paint, follow the basic shape of the pebble around the outer edges of the pebble with your paintbrush. Next, fill in the white outline with white paint for a solid white look as the owl's base. Allow to dry.

With your markers, draw or paint the eyes of your owl using a flowered type of format. A solid small circle, with a circle around that, then flower petals all along that outer circle looks nice. If you'd like to capture more of a retro type of appearance, draw a heart around the eyes using the color that you plan to use for the body so it matches.

After figuring out where on this creature you'll put the wings, draw them in with the same colored marker and decorate them with stripes, or spots. Then paint in the owl's body around the wings in whatever neon color you've chosen for him.

Give the owl a coat of varnish to set things nicely and create a finished look for him. Once you've created the whole family, you can set them up on a windowsill or perhaps use them as paper weights. They're also a great gift for birthday parties for friends.

The friend I mentioned earlier in the article that already has done this project, finds that these stir up a lot of conversation surrounding them because of their striking look. The neon colors really catch eyes. I can't wait to get these displayed in my own house.
