Students were nervous and quiet as they entered Williams Memorial United Methodist Church for their first experience with the Quiz Bowl competition. As the Spring Lake Park Elementary team got used to their buzzers, lights, and the procedures, they loosened up and took the competition by storm!

Quiz Bowl is a sort of general-knowledge academic challenge. Each match consists of four rounds. There were five matches in this competition, with each team receiving a bye for one match.

The questions ranged from a simple, "Spell the plural of tooth" to questions so difficult and obscure that even parents, teachers, and moderators were dumbfounded. There were categories related to math. language arts, literature, general science, biology, spelling, and even obscure movie and nursery rhyme references.

Supporters of the Spring Lake Park team were ecstatic to watch Spring Lake Park students go on to win every single round. The most tense moments came when one match ended with a tied score, requiring a sudden death overtime round. Ten random questions were asked, and Spring Lake Park brought it home in the end, coming back from behind to win by one question. The moderator stated that this was the first tie he has seen in his twenty-five years of moderating this competition.

To add more fun and drama, students faced friends and team mates from other activities, with one student facing fellow baseball, basketball, and girl scout buddies on the other team in one match. Sportsmanship and a spirit of goodwill was evident among all schools.

In the end, Spring Lake Park students were all smiles as they posed for team pictures. As the first place team, this team will face off with the second and third place teams in a finals competition to be held Thursday, December 10.

Good luck to all teams Thursday.
