But it was only two days--then straight on to HHH--Hazy, Hot and Humid for the next two months. And rain. There are times when it pours day and night with no let-up for over a week.
But here in Malta now, it's the spring I've always envisioned--sunny, warm and dry. It started about 10 days ago and will, hopefully, last a few more weeks. Gradually, however, it will get hotter and hotter until the heat becomes unbearable in July and August.
But spring was a long time in coming. Just my luck when I came last October, Malta experienced one of the coldest and rainiest winters in 40 years. It was freezing in our stone house with tile floors. It was, actually, warmer outside than inside the house. And now the fisherman are complaining that the fishing season is late because the water is six weeks behind from what its temperature should be.
But slowly, I've noticed that I don't need the gas heater anymore. And I can walk on the tile floor with only one pair of socks. My partner and I can eat breakfast out in our yard in the morning and dinner there in the evening. The roof is warm during the day, but still a little too cool at night to hang out on.
The best part? No rain. It shouldn't rain now--except for an occasional shower--until the fall--maybe not until November if I'm lucky.
I've been here in Malta during August and the heat was terrible. But you know what? I've been in Boston and Dover, New Hampshire, and the heat has been terrible. At least, when it's hot in Malta, it makes sense; it's the Mediterranean. But when it's hot in the Northeast, it makes no sense to me. It's disgusting and seems like a waste of heat.
I'm struggling now to get my work permit in Malta. It's my third application and I don't know if I'll end up being to work here or not, but I still love Malta. There's no place like home...in the spring.

Post a CommentI'm glad you're enjoying the weather in Malta, Ilene. We've had some crazy weather here in northern California with temperatures in the 30sC (90sF) so I didn't feel like doing much this past weekend. I just dreamed of how lovely it would be to go home for 6 months and return here when it starts to cool down in late autumn/ early winter.
