Spring is Sprouting, Summer Will Be Shouting, and God Has Nothing to Do with It

Jeff Musall
After reading an article "Spring is sprouting and revealing God's grand design" I feel compelled to comment. The author takes a position common in religion, that everything beautiful and wonderful is because of God. What if they are right, what does that say about God?

The piece lists several sites near Los Angeles where a person can go to see buds that are "blooming, declaring the glory of their creator." If there is glory to God in the budding of spring flowers, shouldn't we also search for God in other events? Or do we assume God to be no longer concerned with us puny humans, just wanting us to glorify him, while he rests?

Think about it - if you are religious, these are important questions.

If you believe your God is responsible for the coming spring, do also hold him to account for, say - earthquakes in Haiti and Chile? After all, either he directly caused them (active deity) or he created the conditions leading to them (passive deity). In either scenario, he dropped the ball.

Or he just doesn't care, or wants to bring misery to test us. What about the most likely, that he just doesn't exist?

The article about spring blooms is the same old story, like an abused child forced to find some good in the parent abusing them. Religion gets people to see the world through a twisted prism that finds "glory" in everything good, without questioning a supposedly all-powerful deity on the bad.

Here in Oregon I can see natural wonder all around me. From the rugged Pacific to the Cascades and the High Desert, there is beauty everywhere. I see no design in it, no God, just wonderful, random beauty. I wish the religious could view it that way too.....

Every fifteen seconds a child dies from either waterborne illness or lack of good water. Have your God fix that one, then I can accept giving him glory for flowers, sporting event wins, and awards won.

Thanks for saying what seems so obvious to some of us. It is frustrating to see people praying to be saved from danger, or to have their child cured of cancer. to the very god they believe has control. If god can cure cancer in children but won't, forget it!

But, surely you know that God sent the earthquakes in Haiti because generations ago, the people sold their country to the devil? Praise the Lord for his mercy!

As I age I see too much shame from religion...such as the teen boys killing themselves in my town after a coach/ racy IM scandal. Very tragic. Especially for what could all be a made up story of God. Who knows.

golly Jeff; this one is more pointed than i've heard in a while. your points are of course well taken; i just wonder what rumbling event has taken place which has elicited all this rankor?

Well said. I believe that a lot of things are the result of nature. As for chance meetings, deja vu and things like that, probably more due to chance, or some other dimensional force that we are not aware of, rather than God. In my opinion of course.
