Spring Themed Cook-Off Parties

Dee Dee Smith
On New Year's Day I got together with some friends and family for a chili cook-off. It was a blast and a wonderful time of bonding, catching up and even making new friends. And even though my white chicken chili recipe didn't win, I left the party happy and excited about our plans for future cook-offs.

With spring upon us, it is about time for us to plan another cooking challenge. If you're interested in doing something similar, here are some ideas:

Easter Cupcake Wars

Being one of the first official spring holidays, Easter is represented by warm pastel colors and festive chocolate treats. Consequently, it is a perfect time for you and your friends to host your very own cupcake war. Judging should be based on a few criteria including uniqueness, taste and presentation. Incorporate an Easter egg hunt in the party for loads of family fun.

Weight Loss Recipe Cook-Off

Spring is a popular time for weight loss as everybody wants to get their bodies in shape for the beach. Kick off your weight loss program with a weight loss recipe cook-off. This is ideal challenge for an office, club or other large group. Be sure to divide recipes into categories such as appetizers/snacks, entrees, desserts and even low-calorie drinks. Choose a panel of judges, or have a voting booth to allow for audience participation.

The Mystery Ingredient Cook-Off Game

Who doesn't enjoy a good mystery? Make your cook-off into a mystery game. Although this idea can be implemented in many different ways, one simple way is to have a secret ingredient. This secret ingredient should be told to the participating cooks and judges only. The night of the party, there would be two contests. One, a contest giving spectators a chance to guess the secret ingredient, and the second, a judge's award given to the cook who best uses the secret ingredient.

Cook-offs should be fun and relaxing, so do your best to keep it simple. Other ideas include burger, barbecue, mac and cheese or pie contests.
