Spring Time Senses

Memories and Experiences of Spring

Amber Keller

The bright sun breaks over the mountain. Birds are singing their melodic songs. Water trickles from streams full with the melting snow. The bee's buzz and squirrels are hard at work searching for more food. These are only a few of the signs of spring.

Walking to gather the mail, if I stop and close my eyes I can hear children playing down the street, loud revs of motorcycles on the main road, and my neighbor washing his car in his driveway. I can smell the gentle fragrance of the crocus and early tulips that have bloomed. The sun warms my body, leaving me satisfied.

We have all waited so patiently for this season to arrive. It is like having a much-anticipated gift placed into your lap. Pulling apart the bow and lifting the lid slowly so as to savor every moment and once you look inside it is so wonderful all you can do is simply stare at it, full of joy.

Perhaps we should all take the time to enjoy these wonderful gifts nature brings us every season. Going about our busy lives it's easy to ignore the simplicities. A few moments each day may just give the solitude that makes the difference between ending up in an irritable mood from our daily grind and giving a stranger a smile.

Spring for childhood means outdoor activities. Hiking, biking, playgrounds, picnics, fishing, and fun times. The children are full of happiness and smiles.

It's as if mother earth takes a deep breath and blows it out with a release, settling back to enjoy the ride. Black and white is transformed to a color palette, and the land is thawed. Cold is now warm. Brutal is now forgiving.

The snow gives way to rain. Rain brings life back to nature. Animals stretch their stiff limbs and peer out onto the terrain with new eyes.

Let's all rejoice right now for it is spring, and spring is, well, wonderful.
