Spring Wedding Do-It-Yourself Centerpiece Ideas

Spring is the season of rebirth and renewal, and with nature in full bloom and warmer weather fighting the winter blues, it's no surprise that spring is a popular time for weddings. The overall wedding experience largely depends on the details, and because wedding guests will be spending a significant amount of time at the reception it's important not to overlook the key element of the table setting: the centerpiece.

When choosing a centerpiece for a spring wedding, it is important that the design not clash too much with the overall theme or color scheme of the wedding and reception decor. If the wedding is largely done in pastel colors, you would want to choose colors in your centerpiece which correspond with pastels. If you have a very elegant ceremony and elaborate details in the reception, you wouldn't want to use a cheap-looking plastic centerpiece. You will also need to research which types of fresh flowers are available at the time of your wedding and how long those flowers last in order to know when they should prepare. It would be a waste of time and money to assemble a beautiful floral centerpiece only to have it wilt before the reception. Click here for tips on how you can extend the life of fresh flowers to use in centerpieces.

Green is a color often associated with spring, and the foodies at Epicurious have put together a unique and lovely centerpiece which uses asparagus and artichokes instead of the usual grasses and stems along with lovely pink and spring-colored flowers. Click here to view that tutorial.

Brightly colored fruits and flowers can be placed in tall, clear, rectangular vases to make a visually stunning, easy to put together springtime centerpiece. Try crisp green apples, limes, oranges, or lemons along with white flower blossoms, such as the gardenia. You could also use a smaller, square glass vase and use a few fruits at the bottom as a base and incorporate coordinating colored flowers over the top for a more traditional-looking (but still unique) centerpiece. Vases can be found in hobby stores or often in wholesale lots through Ebay sellers.

Living centerpieces using potted wheat grass can make lovely spring wedding decorations. Present this kind of centerpiece in a classy white or silver metallic square or rectangular vase. Add a few fresh flowers, such as white roses or colorful blossoms of seasonal flowers for contrast against the green grass.

If your ceremony was simple, you will want the decor at your wedding to be simple as well. Simple doesn't have to mean boring, though. Colored glass bottles and vibrant fresh flowers make wonderful centerpieces. Many thrift, hobby, antique, and craft stores sell colored glass vases and bottles. A blue colored glass bottle containing one or several bright flowers, such as red zinnias, peonies, carnations, or tulips would make an attractive and simple spring centerpiece. If you don't want to use colored glass, antique-looking clear jars would also look nice with a few simple long-stemmed flowers inside.

Centerpieces with aquatic elements are also popular and easy to make. One simple take on this idea is a short clear glass vase with a large white flower floating on the water inside. Tie a black ribbon around the vase for a sophisticated touch. Bowls with floating votive candles can be dressed up with rose petals for a romantic feel.

In addition to using clear glass vases for centerpieces, many brides are choosing other containers for their centerpieces. Small wooden box planters and rustic galvanized metal buckets can be used to hold flowers that correspond with the wedding's color theme.

The centerpiece at the reception table is such an important detail in planning a beautiful wedding, but it doesn't have to be a detail that you spend a great deal of money on. Many of these ideas can be tweaked to fit a couple's individual style, taste, and budget. Springtime is a gorgeous time of the year, and luckily many colorful flowers are available to choose from when designing a centerpiece that will be visually appealing and practical.
