Springfield Massachusetts Police and Emergency Service Personnel Excel

Prompt, Polite and Professional

As a decorated NYC first responder during the World Trade Center tragedy I have had the honor of working alongside some of the most skilled emergency professionals in the world. It is difficult to meet the same standards of excellence, but that is what I found last week in Springfield, Massachusetts.

After a "seemingly" minor work accident resulted in a broken ankle I found myself trapped at home, unable to get myself to the Emergency Room. My friends who initially tried to lift, drag or carry me became concerned about harming me further and the only option left was to contact the Springfield PD. Calling the non emergency police line, I spoke with Patrick who dismissed my "this is not a big deal at all, but can you please send an ambulance when you have one free" attitude. Patrick was empathic and understanding but moreover he imparted the type of response vulnerable people wish to hear. "We are coming for you now Cathy" he assured me. "If they are not there in a few moments, please call me back". I protested that I was not having a heart attack or in imminent danger, but Patrick persisted with me. "We can't have you up there crawling around your apartment" he chided.

I felt much calmer after having spoken with Patrick.

Within moments three emergency medical technicians were taking a brief medical history and examining my ankle before lifting me onto a stretcher. The technicians were quite thoroughly medically versed but also possessed that reservoir of common humanity where in I was not, at any time, made to feel like a ridiculous middle aged woman, dressed in bad corduroys, with a swollen ankle. Both the EMTs were not only knowledgeable but extraordinarily respectful and calming. I do not know their names. I wish I did.

When people are feeling vulnerable they often feel as if they are victims to the whims of the world. I was feeling that way when after breaking my ankle I had no way to control my very controlled life and all that came with it. I would like to thank the Springfield Police Department especially Patrick and all the EMTs who serve our city so bravely and so professionally. Take note Mayor Sarno, you must be doing something right if your first responders exceed the gold standard. They did for me. I am pretty sure they do for all.

I have been a harsh critic of Springfield Mass for all the months I have lived in this city. Never again. The Springfield Police Department and Ambulance have proven me wrong. I admire your professionalism and your empathy. Thank you first responders.

I am glad you had a positive experience and trust you are well on the way to recovery now. I do not wish to consider a world with out the police force and EMT's.

I hope you are up and about and 100 percent soon Cathy. The police and EMTs should be hailed as heroes for all they do. They are amazing when someone is hurt or ill.
