To begin with, you should make sure that your lawn is prepared to greet the spring. Try to remove all of the leaves and sticks and winter garbage from your lawn as soon as the snow melts. Be sure that you are taking care of your lawn right away in the spring, do not wait too long before you start raking. You should preferably start soon after the growth has thawed, because that will place you in a better position when it comes to the new grass coming up. However, avoid using a hard rake or one with stiff metal tongs. These will in most cases rip out the baby grass and damage the lawn. It is much better if you use a metal spring rake or leaf rake, and rake very gently in the spring. You should never pull out the grass at the roots. Additionally, crabicide should be applied after any hard raking is done and while nighttime temperatures still drop below freezing. This method is crucial in case you have had any problems in the past with crabgrass sprouting in your lawn earlier.
Another important thing that must be kept in mind is to seed early if you have patches of grass that just are refusing to come up. As seeds take a couple of weeks to get started, better put down the seeds as soon as you know there is not going to be grass there, or even sooner if you have kept track of where grass did not grow the year before. You are sure to get early results if you seed as soon as the ground thaws.
One more important part of springtime lawn care is sufficient watering as often as possible. Even with the snow residue, the lawn will require a lot of water in the spring because the cool weather of spring is the second best time of the year to grow grass. If you keep watering right away in the spring, there is no doubt that your lawn will look great all summer long.
As people are getting busier these days, they are giving less and less time to their lawns. It has recently resulted in the emergence of lawn care professionals who are being hired to look after the lawns on behalf of their owners. Professionals as they are, they will ensure that you have a well maintained and aesthetically pleasing lawn. Their knowledge about the current environmentally safe developments in fertilizer and pest technology will also be of great help in maintaining your lawn. However, you have the ability to keep your lawn beautiful without the need to hire a professional.
