Sprite Bottle No Refill

Jesse Schmitt

I bought a 20 oz bottle of Sprite the other day. In New York City. This bottle came with all the standard rigmarole. I got taxed the 8% or whatever it is. I also got assessed the nickel value of the bottle.

Admittedly I don't do as much of my own personal recycling as I probably should. I actually gave up soda last year for Lent and haven't picked it up to nearly the same degree as I had in the past. When I do have a bottle or can that's got that nickel redemption value, I will typically just throw it into the community recycling bin at home. There also are these recycling bins which many grocery stores have rather smartly begun putting at their doors. If you're too busy or disinterested in waiting around for your nickel, you can just throw it into these recycling bins. You know the ones; they have the circular arrow around the globe.

Anyway, another sad reality of the returning things story in Manhattan anyway is that you can always throw your can or bottle into a corner trash bin and the homeless will be quick to snatch it up.

It's not that I'm opposed to getting back the money I've put in; it's just that with limited recycling stations in Manhattan and these people who do their returns as a full time job, with these epic bags, who's got the time to fight with that?

Nope, I've actually recently taken to reusing glass Snapple bottles with those big jugs of Arizona Iced Tea. There's less calories in the Arizona and it's way cheaper than buying soda. And it's better for you.

Regardless, every once and a while you need a quick hit of soda; in this case Sprite. I got the Sprite bottle and looking at the back of it I was surprised to not see the $.05 recycle value but rather this label: "NO REFILL CA CRV."

No refill? What the heck does that mean? Well the CA CRV is the "California Redemption Value." The same $.05 that consumers get in New York State, Connecticut, and elsewhere. But why did I get this California bottle in New York State? Moreover, how do I get this refund from California in New York?

Sure enough, when I went to try and recycle the bottle at a New York City redemption center, I was rebuffed.

Just my luck. But I'm not going 3000 miles across the country for a nickel, that's for sure!

P.s. When I took all of our bottles back (even the water containers!) I rec'd $3.80 - I'll wait on line for those nickels :)

LOL - we had several cans rejected at the redemption center and I wondered why. Perhaps this is the reason - thanks for enlightening us :) cheers!
