Spyderco Calypso 3 ZDP-189 Blade Folding Knife Product Review

Blair Mathis
Spyderco knives can be recognized from a mile away with their distinct design and extremely sharp blades. The Calypso 3 folding knife is no exception to this rule, sporting the distinct Spyderco design with a long black handle and shiny steel blade.

The blade on the Calypso 3 is a ZDP-189 laminate, which is made of 420j2 brushed stainless steel. The large hole in the blade makes it easy for anyone to open this knife-a far better opening method than those tiny, shallow slits found on many pocket knives. The blade itself is exceptionally thin and about as sharp as is possible. The blade is only 3 inches, which may be necessary in some locations with strict blade length laws, but is kind of undersized in my opinion. When open, the entire knife measures in at 7 inches. When locked in place, the blade feels solid and unbreakable.

The handle itself is plain carbon fiber from a distance, but has a nice checkered pattern that is subtle and attractive. It feels very solid when held. The end of the handle has a wire clip bolted to it, which then extends half the length of the knife handle, which is barely over 4 inches long. The clip is very solid and doesn't appear to be in danger of loosening or breaking.

Overall, this isn't the nicest Spyderco I've seen-visually speaking, of course. The blade is as sharp as you'd expect from a Spyderco, and it will definitely finish the job, whatever that job may be. The knife itself isn't as attractive as others I've seen from Spyderco, but that is a matter of opinion, and perhaps not an issue for you. I'd recommend this knife to anyone who wants a casual carry to use for making thin slices or deep cuts.
