Squad Makes School History

The Fannin County High School Varsity Competition Cheer leading Squad saved its best for last this season, and the results made school history.

After finishing fourth at the Region 8-AA meet, Fannin advanced to the state competition for the FIRST TIME EVER in the schools history, where they finished 17th place. Just getting to the state meet was a triumph for a team that completed shorthanded for much of the season, fielding just 14 athletes instead of the standard 16 that forms a competition squad.

Despite that handicap, Fannin posted its highest score of the year at the Region 8-AA meet at Appalachia High School in Winder on November 3. Fannin finished behind region champion Dawson County, North Oconee and Morgan County. Th squad's season high mark of 195 points was just seven points behind Morgan County, but still enough to earn the coveted spot in last weekend's state competition in Columbus.

All 14 members were present. Everyone is very proud of these young ladies, they have overcome many challenges and viewed those as opportunities to improve rather than being defeated by their adversity. The two missing ladies will be greatly missed while the rest of the team remains strong and flexible, kind and dedicated.

All of the contributions from parents and the community are greatly appreciated. The parents, the community along with the contributions are the backbone of the 06-07 season. Copper Basin Federal Credit Union also helped the squad with meals and support at the state meet. These kids have worked extremely hard to fulfill a history making event for the Fannin County schools.

Finishing in 17 was not what it was all about, Fannin has never been to a competition until now, just being able to say that they were even in the competition was merit enough. The upcoming students now have this to look forward to and possibly themselves to compete and take Fannin on to a future win. Good luck Fannin, our support is with you all the way, and we expect to see you back in this competition next year.
