Squidoo: A Social Networking Site that Pays You Money

Dan Keen
Social networking websites have become extremely popular. These sites provide services that allows members to create unique personal profiles online in order to find and communicate with old and new friends. MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and Friendster are just a few of these social networking sites. Because the Internet has such far-reaching contacts, it's the perfect vehicle to locate or keep in touch with others, and it's timely, unlike sending letters via the post office.

One social networking site that has a unique twist is Squidoo (www.squidoo.com). Like other social networking sites, Squidoo's platform let's you make a page and air your views on topics that matter to you (publish your passions). In addition, it has two ways that you can make money from your page!

Pages in Squidoo are referred to as "Lenses". Creating a Lens is free, and can be done quickly and easily. You can have more than one Lens, as long as they contain different content. Frequently updated Lenses with great content are rewarded in Squidoo's "LensRank" formula, which plays a part in earning revenue for your site.

Squidoo has two kinds of earnings. By registering for co-op services, Squidoo is your exclusive agent to handle co-op transactions. Squidoo will sell sponsorships on your behalf, and you will receive a share of co-op income if Squidoo is able to procure a sponsorship for your specific Lens. Squidoo explains, "Every Lens carries Google AdSense ads. Those are used to generate royalties for the whole co-op (i.e., everyone gets a cut). If you want to increase your direct royalties, though, you should consider adding commercial modules that the visitors to your Lenses will appreciate. Our top money-maker modules include Amazon, eBay, CafePress and The SuperStore. Every single one of these modules generates directly attributable revenue for your Lens, and we pay a royalty to you or to your chosen charity based on that income."

So, incoming revenue that is not directly attributable to a particular Lens is pooled, and this revenue is used to pay for Squidoo's operating costs, and the rest is allocated to pay Lenses based on their LensRank and traffic to their page. Payment is made through PayPal. When signing up, be sure to use the same e-mail address for both PayPal and Squidoo.

With the added feature of making money, Squidoo is rapidly becoming a very popular social networking site.
