Squier Bullet Guitar Review

Richard Ryan
Price Paid: $99

Features : 5
Nothing out of the ordinary here. It looks slick, especially in black, and the maple neck is pretty straight. It has 21 frets, single coil pickups, and does not have a whammy bar. It looks just like a standard Fender strat.

Sound : 7
It sounds just fine. I prefer humbucker pickups myself, but these pickups sound just fine for single coils. They may be a bit more on the bland side, but if you're buying a hundred dollar guitar, chances are you aren't musically inclined enough to tell the difference between these and $50 pickups. I would recommend dropping some better pickups in there later, because the pickups are the only real flaw.

Action, Fit, & Finish :
The only serious problem is the switch for the pickups. It'll get whacked out of position if you so much as look at it funny, so you'll be better off just keeping it in the fifth position. Other than that, this thing is set of very well. The action is pretty low, which is just what I like and many beginners agree.

Reliability/Durability : 6
I wouldn't trust it on a gig, but it gets the job done if you're practicing or just jamming with your friends. It handles perfectly well as soon as you get used to it. Chances are you will never need to change a thing on this guitar, unless of course you want to.

Impression:
I play mostly punk and hardcore music, and I've had no complaints about this guitar. It holds up under some extreme conditions and can really take a beating, and like all Squiers it comes at a price that's affordable enough to warrant smashing it if you really get caught up in the moment up on stage. You may be able to use this guitar after smashing it. It's just that tough!

Overall Rating : 7
For the money, this is definitely one of the best out there. Squiers beat out those non-name brand guitars out there for the same price and I wouldn't advise any other for a beginner. Although if you are one of the fortunate ones to have a lot of excess money and if you're really serious, a more expensive, topnotch guitar will give a huge head start. If you decide to go with the Bullet, just drop a new set of pickups in there and you'll have yourself one hell of a rock machine.
