SR20DET Motor Transplant Anyone?

A Good Read on Deciding Which SR20DET is Right for You

Seth Joyner
When setting up an Infiniti G20 or a Sentra SE-R to have a sr20det there's some things you should know and those are the sr20det options. You could just turbo charge the already existing sr20de in your car, but what if it's old, lazy, and just plain worn out? Well your only option is to upgrade if you have some extra coin, stuff a turbocharged JDM sr20det in that thing out of either a JDM Aveneir, Blue Bird SSS, or a Pulsar GTI-R all of the JDM cars have the powerful sr20det under their hood. So is it that easy? Well it can be if you pay attention to the simple steps of choosing which sr20det motor is right for you.

**The JDM U12 sr20det motor from an Aveneir or a Blue Bird SSS is a good sr20det motor, but they are becoming old and hard to find, if you can find one of these fwd sr20det's from a good used JDM wholesaler you might be in for a bargain. With turbo friendly a 8.5.1 compression ratio a t25 turbo and 370cc injectors it's a good way to get 195-205hp out of this sr20det, with a boost controller and a 3 inch exhaust you could see 230hp and it has a top mount intercooler! Which is pretty good considering the money you'll pay pay for a u12 sr20det. What's the downfall, well it uses an old school sr20det ecu (engine computer), maf (mass air flow sensor), and o2 (oxygen) sensor. So, if they get damaged or broken in transit you may be hunting for a long time for the u12 sr20det electronics.

**JDM U13 sr20det motor from the same two cars listed above. What will you get? You'll get a newer sr20det motor that is less likely to have sat around for a long time with less miles on it, it offers the same components as the U12 sr20det (which I forgot to mention has sodium cooled exhaust valves) but it's newer and the maf, ecu, and o2 sensors are much easier to find online. The o2 sensor for this sr20det motor is the skinny Japanese version found on the American version of a 87' Nissan 300zx turbo so it's readily available at your local auto parts store, this sr20det motor is also good for the same power levels, but may cost you a couple hundred more dollars at around 1400-1600 dollars and if you can't get the maf and ecu with your sr20det then look for them on Ebay or www.sr20forum.com classifieds.

**JDM Pulsar GTI-R sr20det motor is beginning to get a little rarer, but still able to be found, you can find them at jgycustoms.com. What will you get? With this sr20det you get all the goodies including a larger t28 turbocharger, lower compression for even more boost (8.3.1), bigger 440cc injectors, better maf, individual throttle bodies, and a much larger intercooler. That's right, four individual throttle bodies for instant response on this sr20det. So what else makes it special? That's easy, more power, from the factory this sr20det at seven pounds of boost you're looking at making about 225hp and with a boost controller you could be nearly clipping 260hp.

Other sr20det things to take into consideration:

**If you can't find the right sr20det ecu, maf, o2 combo online you may want to use a JWT (jim wolf technology) ecu. This will allow you to utilize your factory US spec sr20de maf and o2 sensors.

**If you do decide to use to use JWT for your sr20det's ecu you have to remember to swap out the JDM coolant temperature sensor and sender with the US factory ones or the engine will never run right.

**One drawback to the Pulsar GTI-R sr20det is that the top mount intercooler may not fit under your hood and it will need resistors for the injectors, but you can find a "how to" on sr20forum.com if you're interested.

**You'll also need a good clutch to hold all that sr20det power, I prefer to use the ACT Extreme (just search for it one ebay) or a competition clutches stage 3.

**All of these sr20det motor sets can make more power with a boost controller if you have the inside of the aluminum maf housing bored out to a bigger diameter and you put on an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator and increase the fuel pressure (such as a Nismo unit) to 60psi. If you do these two modifications you will either have to use a JWT ecu or piggy back an Apexi digital S-AFC (air fuel controller with a blue screen). If you decide to use the S-AFC on your sr20det's computer you'll have to take it to a dyno
