Srixon I-701 Iron Review

Srixon over the years has been better known as a golf ball company, not a club company. But recently some very good players including Jim Furyk have been playing not only their golf balls, but their golf clubs as well. While their main success in golf equipment has been in their irons, they plan to work on some new woods in the new season trying to gain an even bigger piece of the market share.

The Srixon I-701 irons are the perfect set for the mid to high handicap player. It's traditional look and cavity looks very good to players on all talent levels. The cavity features a deep, undercut design which moves weight not only around the perimeter, but further away from the face causing a lower center of gravity and a set of irons that are easy to get into the air.

To give the player a little more distance, the I-701 features a 2-Piece club head with the body and face, while both forged, are welded together to create a higher COR which translates to more distance on all spots of the face. This at first made me think that the face was going to feel very hard and not produce a lot of spin, but I was wrong. The club still feels like a one piece forged club head, with a little added kick!

When I got a few irons to try, I noticed how clean they looked, even for a game improvement iron. The technology in place for these irons did exactly what they were supposed to do by allowing me to hit some shots on the heel and toe and still keep a reasonable amount of accuracy and distance. When I squared this club up and hit it solid it simply jumped off the face on a very high trajectory! Working the ball with a fade was not the easiest thing to do with this set, but I was able to hit a few small cuts. I really liked the feel of the 2-piece forged club head. It was still soft due to the forged face while being able to give me the extra distance that you would expect from this style of head.

If you like their golf balls, you may want to give their irons a try. I will review the I-701 Tour irons soon, which will sure to have low handicap players drooling over this set!
