St. George Lighthouse

Denise White
The first lighthouse was constructed on the west end of St. George Island in 1833 under the guidance of Winslow Lewis. The lighthouse stood 75 tall and had 11 lamps to light it. It wasn't long before they realized the lighthouse may be in the wrong place and efforts began to change the location.

In November 1848, the new lighthouse was lite by light keeper Francis Lee. This lighthouses life was short as in 1851 a severe storm toppled it and 2 other lighthouses.

On December 10, 1851 Emerson and Adams was commissioned to build a another tower. This tower was built 250 yards inland instead of on the sandy beach. This lighthouse stood for many years. In 1994, the light was deactivated. Due to beach erosion the lighthouse was leaning so bad they were concerned it would topple at any time. There were numerous attempts to save the lighthouse. One such is viewed in the picture to the left when the lighthouse was stood back up and a foundation poured around it. But time, weather elements, and stress from leaning so many years the lighthouse toppled in October, 2005.

The Florida Lighthouse Association is still trying to this day to renovate the remnants of the lighthouse, with the hopes that maybe one day it can stand again. The above photo was on the Florida Lighthouse Associations site, there are pictures of every lighthouse in the state of Florida posted on that site.
