The East side of the island is the most populated area and has the majority of the towns and night activity. The beaches on the east side of the island are fair but do to all the activity they are churned up and the visibility is much worse than the rest of the island. All this aside, these beaches provide some excellent views at night when the sun is setting over the neighboring island of St. Thomas. These views can make some very romantic dinners or just make an average evening stroll along the beach a memorable time.
The North side of the island is the most popular side for beach hunters to visit. The beaches on this side of the island are exceptionally clear and boast some of the best snorkeling and diving worldwide. The most popular beach on the north side is Trunk Bay. Trunk Bay has a four-dollar entrance fee but is very rewarding with excellent snorkeling that has fish that are accustomed to people and a nice beach lined with palm trees. A word to the wise though, Trunk Bay can become a little crowded when boats from cruise ships come to the bay and unload large amounts of people. If you prefer a less crowded and a more isolated beach the north side still has many more offers. Hawksnest Beach is a white sand beach that has the best surrounding atmosphere because of its luscious tropical surroundings and aqua blue water. Cinnamon Bay is a pristine beach with some of the softest sand on the island, which stretches for over a mile. Cinnamon Bay offers almost an equal amount of facilities as Trunk Bay but doesn't have an entrance charge. Cinnamon Bay offers you a chance to go out and find your own slice of beach, which will be away from everyone else and leave you in complete solitude.
The Western side of the island is not as populated but still has some spots that is accessible to the public. Leinster Bay has incredibly clear water but the beach is mainly large pebbles. Leinster Bay has a spot a couple hundred feet out called Watermelon Cay, which has exceptional snorkeling views or tropical coral and a large population of starfish. Hurricane Hole is a spot on the western half that has around four different bays in it. These bays are in great location to watch the sunrise over the British Virgin Islands.
The South side of the Island offers a rougher and more open area of beaches. The south side is open to the wind and stronger currents that cause some of the largest waves on the island. A popular spot is the Lameshur Bays because of their easy access and some of the better swells on the south side.
The Island of St. John has a beach spot for everyone's needs, and even more. With its tropical jungles and inviting waters, St. Johns has a very distinct and alluring atmosphere. So if your looking for snorkeling in crystal clear water, body surfing on warm waves, or enjoying lobster while the sun sets over a distant island, St. Johns has it for you.
