Savannah's St. Patrick's Day celebration is perhaps best know for the green river that runs through town the day of the celebration. This surreal event is just the beginning of what is always a wonderful holiday celebration. This year's events will actually gear up as the month of March approaches, with events gaining ground until they explode with the St. Patrick's Day parade on Saturday, March 17th. This year will mark the 183rd anniversary of the parade in Savannah. The single day event is among the top 20 that take place in the Southeast and is the second largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the United States. The St. Patrick's Day celebration is also the largest single day event in the Southeast.
Each year over 400,000 eager visitors converge on the sleepy town of Savannah during the week prior to St. Patrick's Day. They come for the festivities which rival New Orleans during this time. In addition to the spectacular showing that Savannah puts on for St. Patrick's Day once the parade is over other exciting events will carry you through the weekend.
In addition to the multitude of pubs and clubs in the area that will be filled to the brim with excitement, there are more docile activities in which one can engage in during the day. There is a fantastic historic district tour which brings you to all the major sites in Savannah. There is also a ghost tour that runs nightly if that happens to be your thing. Carriage rides offer a more romantic view of the city. There are also several cruises to choose from including a dolphin cruise. If you like the water, River Street is a wonderful, paved path which runs for a mile or so along the river. One end harbors amazing shops and restaurants while the other offers quiet stroll. Along the path is the famous Waving Girl who welcomes home sailors from their journeys. If you'd like to walk on the beach, Tybee Island is just a short, 15 minute drive away.
If you're looking for a great place to stay while attending the great St. Patrick's Day event is Savannah, you won't have to look too far. There are many fine, and reasonable priced establishments in the area. My all time favorite is The Mulberry Inn (www.savannahhotel.com). They offer everything a hotel should, plus some. Having dinner on the porch is one of my all time favorite activities. There are several other hotels and inns in the area that offer equally pleasant stays. The River Street Inn (www.riverstreetinn.com) is a great choice as is Forsyth Park Inn (www.forsythparkinn.com) which is right in the heart of where the action is. The Mansion of Forsyth Park (www.mansiononforsythpark.com) offers the same location and beautiful accommodations.
If you're planning a trip to Savannah over St. Patrick's Day week I would advise that you book your rooms early as the 400,000 persons converging on the city will fill up the available rooms fast. If you live close enough, a day trip would be wonderful idea. But if it's the night life and excitement of the event that you're after I recommend going a couple of days early, seeing the sights and exploring during the day and having a blast in the amazing nightlife of the city.
St. Patrick wasn't originally from Ireland, and you don't have to be of Irish decent either to come and enjoy the festivities in Savannah.
