2009 sees the 108th annual South Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade known locally as "The donning of the green". This magnificent St. Patrick's day parade will be held on March 15th will snake it's way through Boston's "greenest" (most Irish) neighborhoods. The St. Patrick's Day Parade, consisting of colorful floats pipe bands and marching bands, will leave the Broadway 'T' Station at 1.00 pm. It will then wind it's way down West and East Broadway before ending at Andrew Square. The best place to view the parade is anywhere along the Broadway. If you don't want to stand out in south Boston on St. Patrick's Day, remember to don your green!
If the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Boston is not enough to satisfy your desire for the green on the 15th of March, then you might want to check out Boston's own Irish Rock band at the House of Blues on Lansdown Road. The Dropkick Murphys, famous for their soundtrack for the Rod Socks World Series Run, will be taking to the stage at 7.00pm. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster for $29.50, but the venue is likely to sell out. If you would prefer to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Boston on the 17th, the Dropkick Murphys will be playing another set for you at the House of Blues on that date too.
On a slightly lighter note, at least musically, The Beehive, 541 Tremont Street, Boston, is celebrating St. Patrick's day in a more traditional style. Kicking of their "Bee Irish" festivities at 5.00pm on the 17th of March, the Beehive promises traditional Irish "comfort food" such as Wild Irish Salmon Shepherd's Pie and Lamb Stew, as well as traditional Irish music from Hogan's Goat and plenty of Guinness of course. There is no cover charge for this event that promises to be one of the biggest in Boston on St. Patrick's Day.
If you don't want to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Boston drinking Guinness and listening to bands, then you might want to check out the Irish Heritage Trail. This Irish version of the Freedom Trail, winds for 3 miles through the capital of Irish America from downtown Boston to Back Bay. A map and information about the various landmarks on the Irish Heritage Trail can be found at their website.
Finally if you are looking for a fun event for children on St. Patrick's day then head on down to the Children's Museum at 300 Congress St. in downtown Boston. The Children's Museum will be opening their doors at 11.00 am for a host of St. Patrick's day fun, games, music and dance aimed directly at children. Directions and ticket prices can be obtained by visiting the Children's Museum Website.
I hope you find something fun to do this St. Patrick's Day in Boston and I hope my suggestions have helped. If you are looking for something different or need upto the minute listings for St. Patrick's Day in Boston then visit the Boston.com website.
