Filled with shades of green and Irish heritage, St. Patrick's Day has become an internationally celebrated holiday that eclipses the globe. Originally formed in Ireland to celebrate the Catholic patron St. Patrick, the holiday has now been secularized to include green clothing, food, music, and large parades that millions tune in to view. Ireland has the largest St. Patrick's Day events in the world; however, St. Patrick's Day events in New York City have now become the second largest in the world. Whether you live in New York City or visit for the holiday, no other place in the United States offers St. Patrick's Day Events like New York City. Here are three St. Patrick's Day events in the Big Apple you don't want to miss!

1. The St. Patrick's Day Parade

As the oldest and most popular parade in New York City, the St. Patrick's Day parade was first held in 1776 by Irish military men who were working in the colonies. As each year passed the parade grew becoming New York's largest having over two million people tune in via television. The parade route runs down 5th avenue and, typically, has over 150,000 marchers. Unlike many parades, large floats are rarely seen due to the fact the parade focuses on Irish heritage, music, and dance. Marching bands are one of the more popular entrants. This combination creates a unique setting this is a must see whether in person or on television.

2. The Irish New York Walking Tour

Big Onion provides an Irish New York walking tour that takes you through "Little Ireland" located on the lower east side. You'll be taken back to the 19th century as your tour guide walks you through the various sites that have made Little Ireland a historical landmark in the city. As you view these sites, you will gain a greater understanding of the Irish culture and a greater appreciation for the holiday. Best of all, the walking tour is very affordable and well worth the price. Due to the popularity of the walking tour around St. Patrick's Day, you'll want to be sure and book your tickets ahead of time.

3. The St. Patrick's Cathedral

Located on the 50th street and 5th avenue, St. Patrick's Cathedral is one of the most awe-inspiring structures in New York City. Construction began in 1858 but did open until 1879 due to delays caused by the Civil War. One of the most popular features of the cathedral is the stained class windows consider to be among the finest in the 20th century. This beautiful piece of craftsmanship draws over 3 million visitors a year. A complete mass schedule can be viewed on the cathedral's website, and you'll also want to be sure to visit the cathedral's gift shop. You'll find a large selection of religious items that are uniquely Irish.

There are far too many St. Patrick's Day events in New York City to list, but you've been given a few of the most popular. Numerous restaurants and pubs will also offer a taste of Ireland as you pass between destinations. Experience as much of the holiday as possible. And most importantly, have a great St. Patrick's Day!
