The St. Patrick's Day parade in Cleveland, Ohio is the oldest parade in the state and one of the oldest parades in the country. The first parade was held in 1867. The 142nd annual St. Patrick's Day parade in Cleveland will be held on Tuesday, March 17th. The parade starts at 1:04pm.

Parade Route

The parade will begin at the intersection of Superior Ave. and E. 18th St. It will travel southwest on Superior Ave. and make a right turn on East Roadway in front of Public Square. The parade will then turn right on Rockwell Ave. Cleveland's St. Patrick's Day parade will end on the corner of Rockwell Ave. and E. 6th St. Click here for the parade route map.

This year there will be over 10,000 participants in Cleveland's St. Patrick's Day parade. These participants include high school marching bands, dancers, floats, drill teams, and novelty performers. The parade will begin with the playing of the American and Irish National Anthems.

The Cleveland St. Patrick's Day parade is an event for families. However, the green beer drinking tradition is not lost on the parade attendees.

If you bring the kids remember to bring a large bag to carry their booty. St. Patrick's Day parade participants love to throw candy. There are also a multitude of vendors along the streets selling souvenirs.

Parking & Transportation

If you are attending the parade there are a few things to keep in mind. Parking is at a premium. Expect to pay upwards of $20-$30 for the day to park. Also expect to get downtown at least three hours early and wear your walking shoes.

The only way to avoid traffic is to take RTA's Rapid Rail Transit. For $2.00 you can ride the Rapid right into Tower City that lets out onto Public Square. See the link below for more information on Rapid stations and times.

Entertainment & Food

If you are planning to be in downtown Cleveland early then you can head to E. 4th St. Flannery's Pub is located on the corner of E. 4th St. and Prospect Ave. They will be serving breakfast starting at 6:00am.

The Irish Voice newspaper announced that Flannery's was chosen as one of America's Top 40 Irish Pubs and Restaurants. Flannery's is about as authentic of an Irish pub that you can get without crossing the Atlantic.

If you are going to Cleveland's St. Patrick's Day parade then you cannot miss the food and entertainment at Pickwick and Frolic restaurant and club. They are located at 2035 E. 4th St. Pickwick and Frolic knows how to have a good time on St. Patrick's Day. The doors open at 5:00am with special drink prices. Cleveland radio celebrities Lanigan and Malone will be broadcasting live starting at 5:30am.

The entertainment continues at Pickwick and Frolic with Celtic Rock starting at 9:00am. There is no cover charge for the performance by Cleveland's own Whiskey Island Ramblers. After the parade, Pat Shepard takes the stage around 2:00pm. Pat Shepard entertains Put-In-Bay island goers throughout Cleveland's summers. Comedian Dan Grueter tops off the night with a show starting at 8:00pm.

Pickwick and Frolic will have two buffets available to hungry parade goers. They will have an all you can eat breakfast buffet from 7:00am until 10:30am. The lunch buffet starts at 11:00 and continues until 4:00pm.

A St. Patrick's Day celebration is not complete without corned beef. If you are looking for the biggest and best corned beef sandwich then you have to make your way to Slyman's restaurant at 3106 St. Claire Ave. Slyman's opens at 6am on St. Patrick's Day and serves breakfast and lunch.

Slyman's restaurant became famous when President George W. Bush stopped for their famous corned beef sandwich in 2007. Slyman's was also featured on Rachel Ray's $40 A Day program on the Food Network.

Appropriate Dress

St. Patrick's Day in Cleveland is normally chilly to very cold, but I do remember one parade where the temperature reached the high sixties. Dress in layers for comfort and watch the weather that morning. It is an unwritten requirement that all parade attendees wear green.

I didn't realize this parade has been going on for so long. I always love going. I live close enough where I can walk there if necessary because the parking (as you point out) is definitely at a premium. Thanks for the info so I can actually get there on time this year :)

My son Patrick, who is now an adult, was born on March 17. We've always had a huge St. Patrick's Day parade here in Pittsburgh, too, and when he was small, he referred to it as "my parade" since it coincided with his big day and he recognized his name in all the banners and signs, he assumed it was in his honor.
