St Patrick's Day Party Decorations for Kids

Put the Green on the Bean

Kids love to help make party decorations, and St. Patrick's Day is a good time to let them help. Perhaps your child's classroom is planning a party. If so, the teacher would probably appreciate your offer to supply some decorations. You and your child can make some simple St. Patrick's Day decorations together. Gear these decorations for the kids to wear on their heads and it will be less clean up work for you or the teacher.

St. Patrick's Day Party Hats

Kids enjoy wearing hats and silly things on their heads at parties. Make up some bright green crowns and four leaf clovers for them to wear. All you need is some bright green poster board, some silver and gold glitter, a pair of scissors, staple gun, some green yarn and a roll of green and white crepe paper streamers.

1. Little Girls Headwear: Cut a large triangle out of the green poster board. The bottom should be about 12" across. Place the two sides of the triangle together and staple them together to make a cone shape. Now cut the top tip of the cone off to make about a 2" opening at the top.

Use the glue and glitter to make decorations of clover, moons or whatever your little girl wants all over the cone shaped cap. Your child will enjoy "designing" these St. Patrick's Day party hats for her friends. You may even suggest putting each little girls name on the cap. Once the glitter is dry, you need to add the streamers.

Cut lengths of the crepe paper streamers that are about the length of the cap, from top to bottom. You can add how ever many you want. Place some glue around the inside rim of the top hole on the cap and glue the streamers to the inside so that they flow out and down the back of the cap. Don't forget to make one for the teacher if it is a school party!

Punch a hole on each side of the bottom of the St. Patrick's Day cap. Tie a string of green yarn to each hole. You can use green, white or gold ribbon if you have it. This is for the little girl to tie the hat on under her chin.

2. Little Boy Headwear: Draw a template of a four leaf clover on a piece of cardboard. Add a band about 6" long and 3 inches wide moving out from each side of the four leaf bottom. This creates a headband for the cover to wrap around the head. Cut this out as one piece and trace it onto the green poster board. Trace as many top hats as you need and cut them out. Let your child decorate this with the glitter. When it is dry, punch a hole in the end of the band on both sides and tie a length of green yarn to the ends.

Some little boys may like a top hat. Just draw a top hat on cardboard. It need not be fancy or three dimensional. Cut out several of these. Draw and cut out small clovers to glue to the top hat. Let your child decorate the small clovers with gold glitter and glue them to the top hat. Tie green yarn to the sides of the rim of the top hat to allow the boys to tie the top hat around their head. Simple, yet the kid's will enjoy their St. Patrick's Day head wear decorations.

These sound like fun. I'll send them to my daughter for the kids. They can do this after their "Leprechan hunt." (She has them build "Leprechan traps," and leaves little footprints for them and dyes the toilet water green),
