St. Patrick's Day Party Ideas

St. Patrick's Day is a great excuse to throw a party. You don't have to have Irish heritage to join in the fun. Your St. Patrick's Day party can be adult only or be family friendly.

Outfit
One important aspect of your St. Patrick's Day party is making sure you are properly attired. This means wearing some green. Wearing green can be done very subtly with some simple fresh shamrock pinned to your shirt or extreme. Going all out is probably more fun, so make sure to get out that bright green sweater that you can only wear on a day like this. Perhaps you will want to add a funny hat, shamrock socks, or even add some green to your hair. The sky's the limit when choosing your St. Patrick's Day outfit, so why not take advantage of looking a bit crazy on a day that you are allowed to get away with it.

Decorations
Once you have your St. Patrick's Day outfit planned you will need to organize the decorations. The main color scheme will of course have to be green. Include some green streamers, balloons, plates and napkins. Since St. Patrick's Day falls in March consider dressing your tables with white and orange tulips. Your party will then contain all three colors of the Irish flag.

Food
Food will be the most difficult part of your St. Patrick's Day party as it will involve some cooking. Make sure to include homemade Irish soda bread and Irish brown bread with ample jam and butter to dress it in. There are many recipes for Irish bread online and it isn't very difficult to make. Try your best to look for an authentic Irish bread recipe. As a main course the traditional Irish/American dish on St. Patrick's Day is corned beef and cabbage along with a good helping of potatoes and a few carrots. For dessert make some cupcakes and cookies and decorate them to fit your St. Patrick's Day theme.

Drink
A popular Irish/American tradition on St. Patrick's Day is green beer. Green beer is simple to make. To make green beer you should use a light colored beer. You then just need to add a few drops or green or blue food coloring and stir. It is also a good idea to have some other Irish drink available, such as Guinness, Kilkenny, Baileys and if you can find it fizzy lemonade for the kids.

Music
Music has a long history in Irish culture and is an essential part of every St. Patrick's Day celebration. Make sure you have a large choice and variety to suit everyone's taste. Ensure you include some good Irish jigs to encourage attempts at Irish dancing. You may find this provides a great source of entertainment, especially after a few pints have been consumed. If you want to splash out, hire some traditional Irish musicians.

Games
You may want to include some games in your St. Patrick's Day party. What games you choose will depend on if your party is adult only or includes kids. Kids will probably enjoy craft activities

Whatever specifics you choose for your St. Patrick's day party rest assured that you will have a huge amount of choice on what to use. Most of all have fun.

  • Go for a fun and crazy outfit
  • Get plenty of Irish music
  • Make some green beer
St. Patrick's Day as it is celebrated in the US actually originated in the US not Ireland. Until recently St. Patrick's Day in Ireland was just a quiet holy day.
